scan_port(8) scan_port(8)
NAME
scanport - determine assignment of SCSI bus to peripherals cabinet
SYNOPSIS
scanport [-f] portname
scanport [-f] ctlrname
scanport [-f] [-p] -a
DESCRIPTION
The scanport command is used to perform a device localization, i.e.
the assignment of the SCSI bus to the peripherals cabinet is esta-
blished. The defined assignment is recorded in HWCONFIG. This infor-
mation is needed by CONFIG for (graphical) system display purposes.
Device localization is performed at system start for all SCSI buses
(ports). In addition, the reinitdev(8) command performs localization
for every reinitialized bus.
The scanport command issues SCSI bus resets to the ports during the
localization and then uses EIP queries to ascertain assignments for
all peripherals cabinets. Since the time required for localization
almost quadruples with the size of the system configuration, only
unscanned and reconfigured buses are scanned. Data from the scanned
SCSI buses is stored in /etc/scsidevconf.lar.
OPTIONS
portname Device localization is performed for the specified port [see
autoconf(8)] (e.g. ios1/sport12).
ctlrname Device localization is performed for all ports of the speci-
fied controller [see autoconf(8)] (e.g. ios1/scon12).
-a Device localization is performed for all modified ports of
all controllers (system start).
-f Device localization is performed regardless (enforced).
-p Error messages are simply logged during device localization
for all ports. These error messages can also be output by
specifying the -p option.
NOTES
Device localization is not supported by all peripherals cabinets
(e. g. not by PXRC). This means that the affected SCSI buses cannot be
localized and an error message is issued. Localization is also not
possible if the EIP cabling/configuration is not correct.
If basic system settings are changed (e. g. the EIP-PID is changed),
scanport must be executed with the additional -f (scanport -af)
parameter.

WARNING
The scanport command issues SCSI bus resets to the SCSI buses (speci-
fied port) during device localization and should therefore not be exe-
cuted during normal operation.
