yppasswd(1M) yppasswd(1M)
NAME
yppasswd - change global user password
SYNOPSIS
yppasswd [-a] [globaluser]
DESCRIPTION
Just as you change the password for a user name with the passwd(1)
command, you can change the password of a global user with the
yppasswd command. The yppasswd command manipulates the yppasswd source
file of the NIS master. The yppasswd source file is normally
/etc/yppasswd but can be given a different name [see yppasswdd(1M)].
OPTIONS
-a The modified global password is entered locally in the
/etc/shadow file, provided that the new procedure for global user
administration is selected and the replacement of the password is
permitted with this procedure.
If the -a option is not specified or if the old procedure for global
administration was selected, the new password is only accepted in the
local /etc/shadow file when the next periodic update takes place. Glo-
bal passwords cannot be changed locally with passwd.
Using global passwords reduces security, because all users can read
the encoded passwords with ypcat passwd.byname - and can therefore
also decode them.
FILES
/etc/default/inet
/var/yp/pwpattern
/etc/passwd.local
