ups(1M) (RM400 only) ups(1M)
NAME
ups - uninterruptible power supply control
SYNOPSIS
ups [-d]
DESCRIPTION
If a system is backed up with UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply), the
system behavior in the event of a power failure can be defined using
the ups command (called without any parameters). Parameters are
entered interactively:
1. "Time from line fail until start of shutdown procedure (in seconds)"
If power is lost and is not restored within a specific time frame,
the system is shut down.
Default time frame: 20 seconds
2. "Time to wait until battery is loaded (in minutes)"
Following a power failure, the accumulator of a battery can be
fully discharged. To recharge the battery, a specified period of
time should elapse in "safe boot" mode (see point 4) after power
has been restored.
Default time frame: 120 minutes
3. "Shutdown behavior (0 = normal shutdown, 1 = immediate shutdown)"
In a "normal shutdown", the user applications entered in the shell
procedure /etc/usr.shutdown are terminated when this procedure is
started. The reason for the shutdown is then sought. If none can be
found, the operating system is not terminated. Otherwise, the com-
puter operation is terminated correctly with the shell script
/sbin/shutdown. If "immediate shutdown" is selected, the computer
operation is terminated by calling the /sbin/uadmin 2 0 command.
Default setting: 0 = normal shutdown
4. "Boot behavior (0 = safe boot, 1 = temporary unsafe boot)"
This setting defines the operating mode for the boot process fol-
lowing a power failure. If 0 is entered, a "safe boot" occurs, i.e.
after power has returned and the system is brought up, there is a
pause until the batteries have been properly loaded. This time
period is specified under point 2 (see above). Multiuser mode is
only permitted after this time has elapsed.
If 1 is specified, a "temporary unsafe boot" occurs, i.e. the sys-
tem starts multiuser mode immediately.

5. "Quit"
The ups command is terminated and the values set are activated.
The ups command with the -d option activated the ups daemon. If there
is a problem with the power supply, the ups daemon initiates a shut-
down. The ups daemon is started when Reliant UNIX is being brought up.
NOTES
The ups command can only be executed by the system administrator.
A system can only be backed up using either BBU or UPS. Simultaneous
operation is not supported.
The sum of the daemon waiting time and the process runtime must not
exceed the maximum battery bridging time. It is also worth considering
having a reserve for a further power failure.
The maximum stored energy time in the batteries for the UPS depends on
the type being used (please refer to the documentation supplied with
UPS).
