NAME
refnet - general introduction to the Networking Reference Manual
DESCRIPTION
Overview
The Networking Reference Manual (Reliant UNIX 5.44) describes the com-
mands, system calls, subroutines, libraries, file formats, protocols,
and miscellaneous facilities required by users of RM systems working
in the network. It is valid for RM400 (or RM200 and RM300) and RM600
systems.
Further information on networking can be found in the following manu-
als:
⊕ The Networking Administrator's Guide describes how shell commands
make networking administration possible and how, with the help of
the SYSADM interface, networking administration by menu selection
is carried out.
⊕ The Networking Interfaces manual describes the TLI and socket
interfaces as well as remote procedure calls.
⊕ The User's Guide provides procedures for and explanations of admin-
istrative tasks.
Naming conventions
Throughout the manual, extensions appearing in brackets after a com-
mand name, library function name or protocol name are cross-references
to the relevant section in this (or in another) manual. A description
with the extension (1M) or (7) means, for example, that this command
or protocol is located in the corresponding section of this manual (or
in the System Administrator's Reference Manual).
Descriptions followed by (4) or (5) are located either in section 4 or
5 of this manual or in the System Administrator's Reference Manual (or
in the Programmer's Reference Manual).
If (1) is specified after a command name, the corresponding descrip-
tion can be found either in this manual or in the
Commands. User's Reference Manual
or in the
Programmer's Reference Manual
An overview of which user commands are found in which manual is pro-
vided at the end of this manual page as well as under refurm(1) and
refprm(1).

A description followed by (2) or (3?) is located in the corresponding
section of the Programmer's Reference Manual.
A description followed by (3N) is located in this manual.
A description followed by (4) or (5) is located either in section 4 or
5 of this manual or in the Programmer's Reference Manual.
A description followed by (7) or (8) is located either in section 7 or
8 of this manual or in the System Administrator's Reference Manual.
Note for online users:
With the man command, you can call up a manual page using its exten-
sion. This is useful if a manual page is available under the same name
in several sections and can only be distinguished by means of the ex-
tension, for instance arp(1M) [command] and arp(7) [protocol]. If you
call up the manual page using "man arp", the description for arp(1M)
is displayed first, followed by that for arp(7). With the "man 7 arp"
call on the other hand, only the description for arp(7) is displayed.
The procedure is similar for manual pages for which there are dif-
ferent "versions", for instance AT&T and UCB. Here it is also possible
to call up the description you require, e.g. for the "chown" command,
for which there are two variants AT&T and UCB. If you are only
interested in the UCB description for example, you must call up the
manual page as follows: "man 1-ucb chown".
Structure
The Networking Reference Manual is divided into seven sections:
(1) User Commands
(1M) System Administration Commands
(3N) C Functions
(4) File Formats
(5) Miscellaneous Facilities
(7) Protocols
(8) System Maintenance Procedures
Section 1, "User Commands", describes commands and programs used by
"normal" users of a UNIX system network.
Section 1M, "Commands", describes commands and programs used for net-
work administration of a UNIX system.
Page 2 Reliant UNIX 5.44 Printed 11/98
ref_net(1) ref_net(1)
Section 3N, "C Functions", describes the available library functions.
Section 4, "File Formats", documents the structure of certain types of
files.
Section 5, "Miscellaneous Facilities", describes miscellaneous facili-
ties such as MADGE or PCNFS.
Section 7, "Protocols", describes socket interfaces such as ARP, ICMP,
TCP etc.
Section 8, "System Maintenance Procedures", discusses tools for boot-
ing.
Entries are arranged alphabetically and may consist of several pages.
Some entries describe several routines, commands, etc. In such cases,
the entry appears only once and is arranged in alphabetical order
under its "primary name". An example of such an entry is netdir(3N),
under whose primary name "netdir:" eight different routines (from
netdirgetbyname to netdirsperror) are described. These "alias names"
are always listed and described under the name of the associated pri-
mary command.
For online users, this means that the calls "man netdir" and "man
taddr2uaddr" display the same manual page, which describes both com-
mands.
All manual pages have a common format for both the contents (chapter
structure) and the syntax for using the command. Further information
on these conventions can be found under introsarm1(1M) and
introurm(1). General information on the various intro manual pages
can be found under intro(1). manprint(1) describes how to print manual
pages displayed on the screen using the "man" command.

NOTES
The apropos(1) command [alternative call "man -k", both described
under man(1)] is very useful if you have a keyword but are not sure
what the exact name of the relevant manual page is. For example, if
you want to find out the names of the manual pages covering the topic
"TELNET", you enter:
apropos telnet
The following manual pages are then offered (no distinction is made
between uppercase and lowercase letters):
in.telnetd (1M) - DARPA TELNET protocol server
telnet (1) - user interface to the TELNET protocol
telnetd (1M) - DARPA TELNET protocol server
