NAME
     file - determine file type (MLX addendum)

SYNOPSIS
     file [-h] [-m mfile] [-f ffile] arg ...
     file [-h] [-m mfile] -f ffile
     file -c [-m mfile]

DESCRIPTION (International Functions)
     file can classify files containing characters from supplementary code
     sets. file reads each argument and can distinguish data files, program
     text files, shell scripts and executable files, and natural language
     text files as follows:

     Files                             Classification
     ________________________________________________
     Data files containing             data
     supplementary characters

     Shell scripts containing          commands text
     supplementary characters

     Programming language text files   xxx text
     containing literals or comments
     using supplementary characters

     Executable files                  executable

     English text files containing     English text
     supplementary characters

     ASCII text files containing       ASCII text
     supplementary characters

     If any of the supplementary characters found near the start of the
     file are invalid or not printable the text classifications are suf-
     fixed with garbage.

FILES
     /etc/magic     Can contain references to messages in message catalogs.
                    /etc/magic is self-documenting.
