NAME
portmap - DARPA port to RPC program number mapper

SYNOPSIS
       /usr/etc/rpc.portmap [ -f ]

DESCRIPTION
portmap is a server that converts RPC program numbers into DARPA
protocol port numbers. It must be running in order to make RPC
       calls.

When an RPC server is started, it will tell portmap what port number
it is listening to, and what RPC program numbers it is prepared to
serve. When a client wishes to make an RPC call to a given program
number, it will first contact portmap on the server machine to
determine the port number where RPC packets should be sent.

Due to a security risk, by default, portmap will not forward requests
of the following program ids and combinations of certain processes:

       PMAPPROG ((ulong) 100000)

       NFSPROG ((ulong) 100003)

       YPXPROG ((ulong) 100069)

MOUNTPROG ((ulong) 100005) and MOUNTPROCMNT ((ulong) 1)

YPPROG ((ulong) 100004) and YPPROCDOMAINNONACK ((ulong) 2)

However, to allow portmap to forward these types of requests, invoke
       portmap with the -f option.

Normally, standard RPC servers are started by inetd(1M), so portmap
must be started before inetd is invoked.

OPTIONS
-f Override default behavior and allow portmap to forward all
              types of requests.

SEE ALSO
       inetd(1M), rpcinfo(1M), inetd.conf(4M).

BUGS
If portmap crashes, all servers must be restarted.
