TELXDM(1) X11 R4.11MU05 TELXDM(1)

NAME
       telxdm - xdm control utility

SYNOPSIS
       telxdm [ -HUP | -TERM ]

DESCRIPTION
telxdm sends either a SIGHUP or SIGTERM signal to the currently
running xdm started by init. The syntax of this command is a
       combination of telinit(1m) and kill(1).

SIGHUP is sent by default (or with the -HUP option) which instructs
xdm to reread its configuration files. This will cause xdm to start
managing any displays added to the Xservers file, and stop managing
displays removed. When management of a display is stopped, the user
session on that display is terminated without warning. It will also
restart any displays whose management was terminated by pressing the
terminate button or 'ctrl-Z' on the login widget, and are still in
the list of displays to be managed.

The -TERM option sends a SIGTERM which instructs xdm to terminate.
This will cause all user sessions under xdm management to terminate
without warning. This action should only be done when shutting down
       the system.

The xdm process id (pid) is found by searching for an INIT_PROCESS
utmp entry with the id "xdm". Therefore, telxdm will only work if xdm
is started by init. The suggested /etc/inittab entry is:

       xdm:3:once:/usr/sbin/xdmstart -nodaemon -config /var/X11/xdm/xdm-
       config

The login id "xdm" is provided which has telxdm as its login shell.
If xdm is not running, logging in as "xdm" will restart xdm
management on the local display of a workstation.
