DESCRIPTION
The laserjet filter can be used to select advanced options on a
laserjet compatible printer. This filter takes command line options,
converts these options into laserjet escape sequences, and sends
these sequences to the standard output. The standard input is also
read and passed directly through to the standard output.
Options are:
-a int Timeout after int seconds if the printer is offline or in
some error state. A value of 0 (zero) will turn off the
timeout mechanism.
-b int Set bottom margin int lines from top margin. Also referred
to as text length.
-c int Set character pitch to int characters per inch.
-f name Select font name. Font names depend on the HP laserjet
printer model (or emulation). A list of the available
fonts can be printed from the control panel. Only internal
fonts are supported with this option.
-h int Set top margin at line int. A caveat to this option is
that a formfeed is issued after the escape sequence. This
formfeed results in a blank page, but assures the top
margin setting will take hold for the first page of text.
-i style Select font style style. The styles supported are:
upright italic condensed cond-italic

portrait or landscape. Only the first letter is
significant.
-p num Set font point size to num.
-r int Set right margin at column int.
-s space Select character spacing mode space. Spacing mode can be
set to fixed, or prop (proportional).
-t type Select typeface type. The typefaces available depend on
printer model (or emulation), and font cartridges
installed. Selecting a typeface will automatically select
the spacing. Typefaces supported are:

-B bin Select bin feeder bin. The bin feeders available depend on
printer model (or emulation), and attached bin feeders.
Bin feeder can be any of the following:
standard optional upper-tray lower-tray
low-cassette mp-tray opt-cassette manual
manual-env paper-deck envelope
-E dest Select output bin dest. The output bins available depend
on printer model (or emulation).

available depend on printer model (or emulation).
-T term Use Printer type term. The default type is laserjetII, but
can be set to one of the other HP laserjet types.
Many of these options are printer dependent or may not work in
combination, so it is important to check your printers manual. If a
printer does not support a particular feature and the option is
given, then the option will usually be ignored when the file is
printed.
EXAMPLES
The laserjet filter may be access through the lp print service
facility, or may be used directly on the command line. When using
this filter on the command line, you must redirect both the input and
output of the filter. The following are examples of using the
laserjet filter on the command line.
To print file1 using internal font I00, issue the following command:
cat file1 | laserjet -f I00 | lp
To print file1 using internal font I001 with the spanish symbol set:
Licensed material--property of copyright holder(s) 4
laserjet(1) DG/UX 5.4R3.00 laserjet(1)
cat file1 | laserjet -f I001 -S spanish | lp
To print file1 using a 12 cpi prestige font in a pointsize of 10
(assuming an appropriate cartridge is installed):
cat file1 | laserjet -t prestige -c 12 -p 10 | lp
To print file1 on monarch envelopes from the envelope bin feeder:
cat file1 | laserjet -F monarch -B envelope | lp
DIAGNOSTICS
An exit status of 0 is returned if the filter succeeded. If you are
using the laserjet filter through the lp print service and a printer
fault is detected during output (e.g. carrier drop), then an error
message is sent to standard error. This message is forwarded to the
lp scheduler which in turn alerts the user of the fault.

NOTES
The laserjet filter is automatically configured into the lp print
service facility. In order to establish this filter as the interface
filter to your printer, you should set the printer input type to
laserjet. Additionally, the printer type should be set to the
appropriate laserjet type or printer specific type. See lpadmin(1M)
for more details on setting up printers.
When using the laserjet filter through the lp print service, you can
specify the filter options with the lp -y "modes" option. The lp
options differ from those given to the filter. See lp(1) for more
information on the "-y modes" options.
