        Eclipse MV/family tape subsystem
        _________________________________________________________________

        DESCRIPTION

A mtb, mtc, or mtd tape subsystem consists of a tape controller
with up to 8 physical units on that controller. The models
        supported are as follows:

          Class Model # Description
          mtb 6026 800/1600 bpi 1/2" reel-to-reel
          mtc 6125 1600 bpi 1/2" reel-to-reel streaming
          mtc 6231 DC 300/450 cartridge
          mtc 6311 DC 300/450 cartridge
          mtc E5123SC 1600 bpi 1/2" reel-to-reel streaming
          mtd 4307 800/1600/6250 bpi 1/2" reel-to-reel
          mtd 6299/6300 1600/6250 bpi 1/2" reel-to-reel streaming
          mtd 5308 800/1000/6250 bpi 1/2 " reel-to-reel

While the mtb, mtc, and mtd classes are listed here, the DG/UX
system makes no distinction between the three classes; the three
        names may be used interchangably.

A tape unit may be accessed directly via the special file nodes
in /dev/mt and /dev/rmt. These nodes are named in the form:

              /dev/[r]mt/c<n>d<m>

where <n> is the hardware device code of the controller and <m>
is the unit on the controller. The nodes in /dev/mt provide
access as a block special device as described in mt(7). The
nodes in /dev/rmt provide access as a character special device as
        described in rmt(7).

When accessed as a character special device via the nodes in
/dev/rmt, the maximum physical record size for the model 6231,
6311 and E5123SC tape drives is 8192 bytes. For all other models
listed above, the maximum is 32,768 bytes.
