introduction to DG/UX System special files
_________________________________________________________________
DESCRIPTION
Man pages in this section describe various special files that
refer to Data General hardware peripherals and DG/UX system
device drivers. The names of the entries are generally derived
from names for the hardware, as opposed to the names of the
special files themselves. We discuss characteristics of both the
hardware device and the corresponding DG/UX system device driver
where relevant.
Tape device filenames are in the following format:
/dev/[r]mt/c#d#[hml][n]
where indicates
r a character special interface to the tape (as opposed to
block special)
c# the controller device code (in octal)
d# the unit number on the controller (starting from 0)
h high density (6250 bpi)
m medium density (1600 bpi)
l low density (800 bpi)
n no rewind on close (e.g., /dev/mt/c22d1mn).
If you do not specify h, m, or l, automatic density selection
occurs when reading, and the current setting of the tape drive is
left unchanged when writing.
Disk device filenames are in the following format:
/dev/[r][p]dsk/{c#d# | name}
where indicates
r a character special interface to the disk (as opposed to
block special)
p a physical disk (as opposed to a logical disk)
c# the controller device code (in octal) for a physical disk
d# the unit number on the controller (starting at 0) for a
physical disk
name the logical disk name (e.g., "root," "user,")
