Name

catalogdb − list databases, database locationnames and extensions, and user capabilities.

Syntax

catalogdb [−uusername]

Description

The catalogdb utility allows you to list your databases, other databases that you may access, the database locationnames known to the system, the extensions made to your databases, and your user capabilities. For information on how to modify these attributes, see accessdb(8sql), the ULTRIX/SQL Reference Manual, and the ULTRIX/SQL Operations Guide.

When you invoke the catalogdb utility, the main menu appears, offering the following choices:

Catalog  Database  User  Help  Quit :

Enter Help to obtain a full description of items, which are summarized in the following table:

Catalog
Submenu of additional information you can display.

Database
Detailed information on one database.

UserSummary information about your ULTRIX/SQL capabilities.

HelpHelp information on all menu items.

QuitExit the catalogdb program.

After you enter one of the main menu choices, the screen clears and a new display appears. Each choice from the main menu evokes a different display, including a new menu.  The new menu always includes the Help item and the End item, which returns you to the main menu.

You can only browse through the catalogdb displays; you cannot change the data being displayed. To change any values that are displayed, you must run the accessdb utility. (You must be the ULTRIX/SQL System Administrator or an ULTRIX/SQL superuser to run the accessdb utility).

Catalog Item (Main Menu)

When you enter Catalog from the main menu, the following submenu appears:

Databases  DbExtensions  LocationNames  Help  End

In summary, these menu items display the following information:

Databases
Table of all your databases.

DbExtensions
Table of all your database extension locations.

LocationNames
Table of all locationname/area mappings on the system.

HelpHelp information on each item and on how to use the form.

EndReturn to the main menu.

Database Item (Main Menu)

The Database operation on the main menu prompts you for the name of one of the databases that you own.  When you enter a database name, catalogdb displays information about the specified database.

User Item (Main Menu)

The User item on the main menu displays a summary of information about your username. It lists the permissions accorded to your account, the databases that you own, and the private databases to which you have access.  The two database lists (the databases you own and those you may access) may contain more entries than can be shown at one time. You can scroll among the entries using techniques described in the ULTRIX/SQL Reference Manual and in the help screens provided by catalogdb.

Options

-uusername
Allows the ULTRIX/SQL system administrator to use catalogdb as the user specified by username.

Restrictions

The catalogdb utility uses a forms-based interface and must be run on a supported video terminal or in a workstation window emulating a supported terminal. The terminal type is made known to ULTRIX/SQL through the environmental variable TERM or TERM_INGRES, which must be set to one of the terminal types defined in the /etc/termcap or $II_SYSTEM/sql/files/termcap file.  See the ULTRIX/SQL Reference Manual for information about setting up your terminal for use with ULTRIX/SQL forms-based utilities.

Examples

Browse through data on your own account and database(s):

catalogdb

As ULTRIX/SQL system administrator, browse data of user barrows:
