NAME

DPVMD − Digital PVM Daemon

SYNOPSIS

DPVMD

DESCRIPTION

dpvmd is the Digital PVM daemon process. A daemon process running on each host in the virtual machine provides the process control functions required by a user’s PVM tasks.

The daemons can be started manually on each host. Each user executes their own daemons. When started, the daemon checks if it is the first daemon in the MEMORY CHANNEL cluster for this user. If it is the first, it reads the Digital PVM environment variables set by the user to modify the behavior of the virtual machine. If it is the second, or subsequent, daemon up, it inherits these values automatically from the first daemon.

There are no additional command line arguments necessary when starting second and subsequent daemons. They find the first daemon automatically.

The normal way to kill daemons running on the virtual machine is to use the console halt command.  Alternatively, the script dpvmclean can be run on each host in the cluster.  This kills all processes with pvm in the executable name, and also cleans up semaphores and shared memory regions. If this method is used, the user has to manually kill all PVM processes still running across the virtual machine that do not have pvm in the executable name.
