NAME

npl - Network Profile Loader/Lister

SYNOPSIS

npl [-i] [-d [-123]] [-lr [-123] profile ...] [-p PSDN-profile]

FLAGS

-123Specifies the level(s) of profile on which the specified operation(s) are to be performed.

-dDisplays the profiles currently loaded at all levels (default) or for specified level(s).

-iInvokes the npl utility in interactive mode (refer to INTERACTIVE MODE).

-lLoads profile(s).  For Level 2 and Level 3, the profiles specified on the command line are loaded into the kernel.  Every level 3 profile must have its equivalent level 2 profile loaded.  For Level 1, both the RESTRICTED and the NORMAL profiles are loaded.  If no profiles and no levels are specified, the level 1 profiles are loaded.  If no levels are specified, but at least one profile is specified, the specified profiles are loaded at levels 2 and 3.

-pAccesses the Public Network Information (PNI) supplied for each public PSDN.  All information is displayed in a form suitable for sending to an ASCII printer.  The interactive interface (refer to INTERACTIVE MODE) can be used to access the Public Network Information section by section.  In addition to the information available for each PSDN, an Introduction to PSDNs may be accessed by specifying intro as the PSDN for which information is required.

-rReads profiles(s) and displays the parameter values for each of the specified profiles.  If more than one profile is read (either due to more than one level or more than one profile name being specified) then each profile is displayed on a separate page.  If a level option is not specified, the level 2 and 3 profile parameters are displayed for each profile named on the command line.  If necessary, the output is paginated with the default pager, more(1).  A different pager can be specified by defining the PAGER environment variable.

DESCRIPTION

The npl utility allows a user to perform the following tasks:

•Display information about public networks supported by X.25 for Digital UNIX

•Load and display the network profiles supplied with X.25 for Digital UNIX

Public Network Information (PNI)

Information pertaining to each public PSDN service provider supported by X.25 is available through the npl utility.  Public Network Information for a particular PSDN is accessed by either specifying the -p command line option or by issuing the pni command interactively.  The PSDN is specified by the name of the profile associated with the network.  Accompanying this information is an Introduction to PSDNs.  This introduction can be accessed by specifying intro as the PSDN for which information is required.  This introduction contains a list of PSDNs supported by X.25 for Digital UNIX and the names of the profiles corresponding to each of these networks.

X.25 Network Profiles

X.25 Network Profiles contain information specific to a PSDN.  This information includes frame and packet parameter information, and information specifying which optional facilities a PSDN provides.  The use of profiles simplifies the management of your network.

There are three types of network profile, each type is used with a corresponding management entity:

Level 1Modem Connect

Level 2LAPB

Level 3X25 Protocol DTE

The npl utility is used to load X.25 profiles into the kernel for use by management.  Profiles should be loaded prior to creating management entities for a new network connection.  Once a profile has been loaded it can be replaced (loaded again), but never deleted.  If it is necessary to replace a profile, all management entities using that profile must first be deleted.

The parameters specified by a particular profile can be viewed by reading the profile with the npl utility.  For further information about the profile for a public PSDN, read the Public Network Information for the PSDN required.

The case in which the profile name is specified is insignificant; the names austpac, Austpac, and AUSTPAC are equivalent.

EXAMPLES

npl -d Lists the names of all profiles that are currently loaded.

npl -d -13 Lists the names of all level 1 and level 3 profiles that are currently loaded.

npl -l austpac Janet INFONET
Loads level 2 and level 3 profiles for the three named networks plus both level 1 profiles (RESTRICTED and NORMAL) into the kernel.  If any of these profiles had previously been loaded then they will be overwritten.

npl -l -3 austpac pss
Loads the level 3 profile for Austpac and PSS into the kernel.

npl -r austpac transpac
Displays the level 2 and level 3 parameters of the Austpac and Transpac network profiles through the pager.

npl -p intro Displays the introductory Public Network Information using the pager.

npl -i Runs npl in interactive mode.

INTERACTIVE MODE

The npl utility can be used interactively to access X.25 network profiles and Public Network Information.  On-line help is provided by the utility for each of the commands available through this interactive interface.

For a full description of the commands available refer to the on-line help provided by the npl utility.  The available commands fall into the following general categories:

ProfileAccess X.25 network profiles as per the -d, -l and -r command line options.

PNIAccess the introductory and network-specific Public Network Information.

UtilityGeneral purpose commands to provide on-line help, print facilities, and menu-driven interaction to the Public Network Information.

NOTES

Superuser privilege is required to load profiles into the kernel.
