menu is a means through which you can access the VMS
operating system. DECterm provides the features of a
VT340 terminal. From this window, you can interact
with the VMS operating system by using DIGITAL Command
Language (DCL) commands.
To start the DECterm application:
1. Position the pointer on the Applications menu.
2. Press MB1 and drag the pointer down.
3. Select DECterm and release MB1. A terminal window is
created.

Each file is identified by a file name, a file type, and a file version number. For example, THIS.DAT;2 identifies a file with the file name THIS, the file type DAT, and a file version number of 2. Files are contained in directories. The file name, type, and version of the files in a directory are recorded in a special kind of file called a directory file. When you list the contents of a directory, the system reads the directory file to obtain the names of the files in that directory. You cannot edit a directory file. The DECwindows Window Manager controls the look (for
example, the style and contents of the title bar) and
behavior of your windows when you are working with
them.
To customize your Window Manager environment, move the
pointer anywhere in the Icon Box (except in the title
bar) and press and hold MB2. The Window Manager pop-up
menu appears.
By default, the window style is also determined by the
Window Manager.
To use another vendor's window manager:
1. Choose Window... from the Session Manager Customize
menu. A dialog box is displayed.
2. Click on the Other radio button.
3. In the Window Manager entry field, type the
vendor's window manager image name, for example,
SYS$SYSTEM:NEW_WIN_MGR.EXE.
4. Click on the either the OK or Apply button.

Using the Session Manager Customize menu, you
can change different aspects of your DECwindows
environment. Each Customize menu item contains a dialog
box with several options to choose.
Once you make a change, you must click on the OK,
Apply, or Cancel button to continue working.
Following is a description of each button:

OK Changes a setting and removes the dialog box
from the screen.
Apply Changes a setting and continues to display the
dialog box.
Cancel Cancels any changes made.

Each desktop application has a corresponding command
that runs when you start the application. In the
Customize Applications Definitions dialog box, you are
invited to provide the Session Manager with the command
it needs to start an application that is not included
as one of the desktop applications.
Once you provide the Session Manager with the command
it needs to start an application and the menu item
you want to identify the application, you can add the
application to the Applications menu.
You are also free to provide new commands to run the
desktop applications in a different way. This allows
you to add qualifiers to the commands the Session
Manager uses to start the desktop applications.
Qualifiers specify additional information about how
the command works.
To see the applications and commands already recognized
by the Session Manager:
1. Choose Applications Definitions... from the
Customize menu in the Session Manager.
2. In the Menu Items list box, select the application
whose command you want to see.
3. Select each application in turn to display its
corresponding command.

Selecting the keyboard type that matches your keyboard
model allows the system to use the correct character
when you press the corresponding key. The default
keyboard type is set by your system manager during
the DECwindows installation.
To change the keyboard type:
1. Position the pointer on the Customize menu.
2. Press MB1 and drag the pointer down.
3. Choose Keyboard... and release MB1. The Customize
Keyboard dialog box is displayed.
4. Move the pointer to the scroll bar in the Keyboard
Type box. Use the scroll bar to view the items in
the box.
5. Click on the keyboard type you want. The keyboard
type becomes highlighted.
6. Click on either the OK or Apply button.

The keyboard bell sounds to alert you to a system
message. To adjust the bell volume:
1. Position the pointer on the Customize menu.

4. Drag the arrow in the Percent Volume slider right
or left, or move the pointer to a location on the
slider and click MB1.

To turn off the bell, click on the Bell Volume Disable

Each time you press a key, the keyboard makes a
clicking sound. To adjust the keyclick volume:
1. Position the pointer on the Customize menu.
2. Press MB1 and drag the pointer down.
3. Choose Keyboard... and release MB1. The Customize
Keyboard dialog box is displayed.
4. Drag the arrow in the Percent Volume slider right
or left, or move the pointer to a location on the
slider and click MB1.
5. Click on the Keyclick Volume Enable button (this is
the default).
6. Click on either the OK or Apply button.
To turn off the keyclick, click on the Keyclick Volume
Disable button. Click on either the OK or Apply button.

If you hold down a keyboard key, the character is
repeated until you release the key. Auto repeat is a
default keyboard setting. To disable auto repeat:
1. Position the pointer on the Customize menu.
2. Press MB1 and drag the pointer down.
3. Choose Keyboard... and release MB1. The Customize
Keyboard dialog box is displayed.
4. Click on the Auto Repeat Disable button.
5. Click on either the OK or Apply button.

By setting the Shift Lock button, you can make your
keyboard work just like a typewriter keyboard.
This means that when you press the Lock key on your
keyboard, both capital letters and shifted number keys
are typed.
To set the shift lock key:
1. Position the pointer on the Customize menu.
2. Press MB1 and drag the pointer down.
3. Choose Keyboard... and release MB1. The Customize
Keyboard dialog box is displayed.
4. Click on the Lock Key State Shift Lock button.

Normally, you press the Control and F2 keys together to
open the operator window. However, you can change this
setting. To change the operator window key combination:

Using the Session Manager Customize menu, you can
select a default language. The Language dialog box
includes several different languages (for example,
French, German, and Italian).
Note that not all languages are installed with your
DECwindows installation kit. The default installation
language is English US. See your system manager for
information about installing a language variant kit.
To change the default language:
1. Position the pointer on the Customize menu.
2. Press MB1 and drag the pointer down.
3. Choose Language... and release MB1. The Customize
Language dialog box is displayed.
4. Move the pointer to the scroll bar in the Session
Language box. Use the scroll bar to view the items
in the box.
5. Click on the language type you want. The name of the
language becomes highlighted.
6. Click on either the OK or Apply button.

Setting the Pointer Acceleration speed determines the
rate at which the pointer moves in relation to the
mouse. To set the pointer acceleration speed:
1. Move the pointer to the Customize menu.

appears on the screen.
4. Click on the None, Slow, Medium, or Fast button.

The pointer contains an outline and a filled center.
You can change the pointer foreground color using the
Pointer... menu item in the Customize menu. This is the
filled center of your pointer.
To set the pointer foreground color:
1. Choose the Pointer... menu item in the Customize
menu. The Customize Pointer dialog box is displayed.
2. For monochrome systems, click on the Black on White
button in the Pointer... dialog box to reverse the
fill and outline colors.
For intensity or color systems, click on the
Foreground Color button. The Foreground Color dialog
box is displayed.
3. Press and hold MB1 and move the slider on the
Red Intensity, Green Intensity, or Blue Intensity
sliders. This allows you to adjust the color.
4. Click on either the OK or Apply button.

pointer background color. This is the outline color
of your pointer.
To set the pointer background color:

Normally, your pointer is a left arrow. DECwindows
offers you a variety of pointer shapes. To change the

When you first install DECwindows, the left-most button
is MB1, the middle button is MB2, and the right-most
button is MB3. These mouse button settings are designed
for using the mouse with the right hand.
If you use the mouse with your left hand, you can
switch the mouse button key settings so that the
right-most button is MB1 and the left-most button is
MB3. To switch the mouse button key settings:
1. Choose Pointer... from the Customize menu. The
Customize Pointer dialog box appears.
2. Click on the Button Arrangement Left-handed Button
radio button.

single mouse button click and a double click. To change
the speed at which DECwindows expects one click to
follow another in a double click:

3. Drag the arrow in the Mouse Double Click Timeout
scale right to increase the speed. Drag the arrow to
the left to decrease the speed.
4. You can also move the pointer to a location on the
scale and click MB1.

you can change the output format to sixel and DIGITAL
Document Interchange Format (DDIF).

and white. If your printer supports gray scale or color
output, you can choose these options to produce the
output color you want.
To set the output color:

The print screen aspect ratio allows you to capture
a snapshot of your screen to be printed without
distortion on most devices. The default aspect ratio
is 1 to 1.
Some sixel printers require a 2 to 1 aspect ratio. If
your printed screen snapshot appears distorted, you can
change the aspect ratio as follows:
1. Move the pointer to the Customize menu.
2. Click MB1 and drag the pointer down to the Print
Screen... menu item.
3. Release MB1. The Customize Print Screen dialog box
appears on the screen.
4. Move the pointer to the Aspect Ratio item. Click on
the 2 to 1 button. The button becomes highlighted.

Normally, captured window snapshots are printed with
the image black and the background white. If your
image is, for example, nearly or completely solid,
your printer will use a great deal of printer ribbon or
toner.
You can avoid this by setting the workstation to
capture a negative image. To change this:
1. Move the pointer to the Customize menu.
2. Click MB1 and drag the pointer down to the Print
Screen... menu item.
3. Release MB1. The Customize Print Screen dialog box
appears on the screen.
4. Move the pointer to the Ribbon or Toner Saver item
and click on the Negative Image button. The button

DECwindows prompts you for a file name. You can disable
this feature by changing the Prompt For File Name
option.

You can authorize other users or yourself to log in
from another system and use DECwindows applications on
your workstation.
To authorize other users to use your workstation
display:
1. Move the pointer to the Customize menu.

Security... menu item.
3. Release MB1. A dialog box is displayed on the
screen.
4. Type the node name, the user name, and the method of
transport, of the user you want to authorize.
5. Click on the Add button. The user name is added to
the Authorized Users box.

To remove a user name, first click on the name you want
to remove. Then click on the Remove button. Finally,
click on either the OK or Apply button. The user will
no longer have authorized access to your workstation.

Your Session Manager can be set to control whether the
Session Manager window is displayed during startup.
To specify the startup state of the Session Manager:
1. Choose Session Manager... from the Customize menu.

Manager to be opened as a window at the start of
every session. This is the default setting.
3. Click on the Icon button if you want the Session

DECwindows allows you to "pause" your session or put
your session on hold to prevent an unauthorized person
from using your workstation and to maintain the session
exactly as you leave it.
A message, called the Pause Screen Text, appears just
above the text entry field, instructing you to type
in your password to resume your session. To resume the
session, you must type your password in the Password
text entry field.
You can change this message. For example, you change it
to inform visitors that you are attending a meeting. To
change this message:
1. Choose Session Manager... from the Customize menu.
The Session Manager... dialog box is displayed.
2. Type a new message in the Pause Screen Text entry
field.
3. Click on either the OK or Apply button.
The new message is displayed the next time you pause a
session.

The screen background is the area of the screen that
windows are displayed on. Screen backgrounds can have
different background patterns. Normally, your screen
background pattern is gray. To change the background
pattern:

The pattern you choose is displayed in the Screen
Background button.
3. Click on the Apply button. The new screen background
is displayed.
4. You can click on the Screen Background Default

The DECwindows Window Manager controls the look (for
example, the style and contents of the title bar) and
behavior of your windows when you are working with
them. By default, the window style is determined by the
DECwindows Window Manager.
To use another vendor's window manager:
1. Choose Window... from the Session Manager Customize
menu. A dialog box is displayed.
2. Click on the Other radio button.
3. In the Window Manager entry field, type the
vendor's window manager image name, for example,
SYS$SYSTEM:NEW_WIN_MGR.EXE.
4. Click on the OK button.
To customize your Window Manager environment, move the
pointer anywhere in the Icon Box (except in the title
bar) and press and hold MB2. The Window Manager pop-up
menu appears. Choose the Customize menu item.

Your workstation screen can contain overlapping
windows, much like a stack of papers on your desk. To
display a window that is overlapped by other windows:
1. Move the pointer to the button in the title bar that
appears after the window title. This is called the
push-to-back button.
2. Click MB1.
The top window moves to the bottom of the stack, and
the window under the top window is displayed on the
screen.

If your screen contains a window that you do not plan
to use for a while, shrink the window to an icon. The
icon, a small square that contains the name of the
window, is placed in a special window called the Icon
Box.
To shrink a window to an icon:
1. Move the pointer to the left-most button (the
shrink-to-icon button) in the title bar.
2. Click MB1.
The window disappears from the screen and its icon
becomes highlighted in the Icon Box.

To change the size of a window:
1. Move the pointer to the right-most button (the
sizing button) in the title bar.
2. Press and hold MB1. Move the pointer to the right
and upward until it is outside of the window; an
outline of the window is displayed.
- To make the window larger, move the pointer to
the right and upward.
- To make the window smaller, move the pointer to
the left and downward.
3. Release MB1 when the outline is the size that you
want the window to be. The outline disappears and
the window becomes the new size.

When you first install DECwindows, the left-most button is called MB1, the middle button is called MB2, and the right-most button is called MB3. To move the pointer, move your mouse. When you first install DECwindows, the left-most button
is MB1, the middle button is MB2, and the right-most
button is MB3. These mouse button settings are designed
for using the mouse with the right hand.
If you use the mouse with your left hand, you can
switch the mouse button key settings so that the
right-most button is MB1 and the left-most button is
MB3. To switch the mouse button key settings:
1. Choose Pointer... from the Customize menu. The
Customize Pointer dialog box is displayed.
2. Click on the Left-handed Button radio button.
3. Click on either the OK or Apply button.

The titles of pull-down menus appear in the menu bar of a window, which is directly under the title bar. To choose an item from a pull-down menu, position the pointer on the menu title, press MB1, and drag the pointer down. As you drag the pointer downward, a rectangular outline is displayed around the correct menu item; release MB1. If you decide not to choose a menu item, move the pointer outside of the menu and release MB1. Some pull-down menus have submenus. If a pull-down menu has a submenu, the submenu icon appears to the right of the pull-down menu.

If a pull-down menu has a submenu, a submenu icon appears to the right of the pull-down menu item. To display a submenu, drag the pointer to the submenu icon. To choose a submenu item, release MB1 when the rectangle is displayed around the correct submenu item. If you do not want to choose a submenu item, drag the pointer back to the pull-down menu.

Pop-up menus allow you to keep the pointer in the area where you are working so that you do not need to move the pointer back to the menu bar. To display a pop-up menu, move the pointer over the work area and press MB2. To choose a menu item, release MB2 when the rectangular outline is displayed around the correct menu item.

A scroll bar has stepping arrows at each end of a scroll region and a slider within the scroll region. To move the window one line in the direction of the stepping arrow, move the pointer to a stepping arrow and click MB1. This allows you to move through the data in the window at a pace that is easy to view. To move the window continuously in the direction of the stepping arrow, move the pointer to a stepping arrow. Press and hold MB1. This allows you to scroll through the data in a window at a faster pace.
scroll region

To move the data in the window by one window length, move the pointer to the scroll region and click MB1.
slider
=TITLE slider =TITLE Using the Slider =KEYWORD Scrolling Sliders The slider is the rectangle that appears in the scroll bar. The size of the slider indicates how much of the data appears on the screen. For example, if the slider takes up 10 percent of the scrolling region, only 10% of the data is displayed in the window. To move quickly through the data, move the pointer to the slider. Press MB1, and drag the slider up and down through the scrolling region. When you release MB1, the information from the position in the data indicated by the slider is displayed in the window.

Like windows, some dialog boxes have a title bar (used to move the dialog box from one location to another) and a push-to-back screen button (used to move the dialog box underneath other windows).

If the toggle button next to the setting is highlighted, the setting is activated. If it is not highlighted, the setting is not activated. To change the setting of a toggle button, move the pointer to the square next to the setting and click MB1.
radio buttons
=TITLE radio_buttons =TITLE Radio Buttons =KEYWORD Buttons Just as you can play only one station on a radio at a time, a radio button allows you to activate only one setting from two or more settings. A radio button is the small circle next to a setting. A setting with a highlighted radio button next to it is the activated setting. To change the activated setting, move the pointer to the button next to the setting you want to activate and click MB1. This setting now contains the highlighted radio button.
push buttons

To perform the action indicated by the push button, move the pointer to the push button and click MB1. The most commonly used push button in a window may have a bold border. text entry

You can change the text in a text entry field by deleting the existing text with the Delete key and typing new text. If a dialog box has more than one text entry field, the pointer is located in the first text entry field when the dialog box appears on the screen. To move to the next text entry field, press the Tab key or move the pointer to the next text entry field and click MB1.
list boxes
=TITLE list_boxes =TITLE List Boxes =KEYWORD Boxes A list box displays a large number of choices, such as the names of available files. The list box consists of the items within a rectangular area and usually a scroll bar to the right of the items. To choose one item from the list, move the pointer to the item and click MB1. If you can choose more than one item, move the pointer to an item, hold down the Shift key on the keyboard, and click MB1. This places the item into a set of chosen items.

A scale is a control that allows you to choose a number
that is a position within a range. A scale consists of
a box with a horizontal line in it. At a certain point
in the horizontal line, a boxed arrow points upward to
the current setting.
To change the setting of a scale:
1. Move the pointer to the boxed arrow that points to
the current setting.
2. Press MB1 and drag the boxed arrow to the left to
decrease the setting or to the right to increase the
setting.
3. Release MB1 when you reach the number you want.
You can also click on the scale to pick a certain
setting.
option menus

To make an option menu appear, press MB2 and move the pointer over the active area of the dialog box. The option appears under the pointer. To choose another option, move the pointer through the option menu and release MB2.

Put a session on hold to prevent an unauthorized person
from using your workstation and to maintain the session
environment exactly as it was. When you put a session
on hold, the screen is cleared; you must enter your
password to continue the session.
To put the current session on hold:
1. If the Session Manager window is stored as an icon,
expand the icon to a window.
2. Position the pointer on the Session menu.
3. Press MB1, and drag the pointer down.
4. Choose Pause from the Session menu.
To resume the session, type your password and press
Return. If you make an error when you type your
password, click on the Clear button and start again.

When you end a session, DECwindows stops all
applications running in the session, clears the screen,
and returns the Start Session dialog box to the screen.
To end the current session:
1. If the Session Manager window is stored as an icon,
expand the icon to a window.
2. Choose Quit from the Session menu. A confirmation
dialog box may appear.
3. Click on the Yes button to end your session. Click
on the No button if you want to continue your
current session.
