Glossary
=Title Calendar glossary This is a glossary for DECwindows Calendar terms only. Generic DECwindows terms are not defined here. Select the term for which you need help from the list of additional topics below.

Alarm
=Title Alarm =Keyword alarm =include csh timeslot_entry alarm_setting DECwindows Calendar alarms are appointment reminders that are sent at prescribed intervals before an entry's start time. An alarm consists of both an audible beep and a message box that contains the text from the entry.
autoscroll
=TITLE Autoscroll =keyword autoscroll =include overview options_menu customize_day clock_autoclick =INCLUDE overview widget_section day_widget clock In addition to showing the current time, the clock allows the current Day view to autoscroll. Autoscrolling causes timeslots that are visible in the Day view to adjust so that the current time is always within the first displayed timeslot. If the displayed day is not the current day (today), clicking on the clock in the Day view will also cause the current day to be displayed instead. Autoscrolling can be turned off (for example, by moving the displayed day with the scroll bar). If autoscrolling is turned off, click on the clock to restart it.
Daynote
=TITLE Day Note =KEYWORD Daynote =include overview functions_1 entry_daynotes =INCLUDE glossary handle Day Notes are identical to ordinary calendar entries, except that they are not associated with a particular time. They are displayed below the date in the Day view. Information that is specific to a particular day but not to a particular time can be entered in a Day Note. Day Notes are useful for denoting birthdays, anniversaries, and so on. You can cause Day Notes to repeat at designated intervals and select icons to appear in their handles by double clicking on the Day Note and making the desired changes in the Day Note Editor. Day Notes cannot have alarms.
Fortnight
=TITLE Fortnight =KEYWORD fortnight =INCLUDE csh timeslot_entry repeat_interval A fortnight (or fortnite) is equal to 2 weeks. An appointment that occurs fortnightly occurs every 14 days.
Handle
=TITLE Handle =KEYWORD handle =INCLUDE overview functions_1 entry_moving =include overview functions_1 =include csh timeslot_entry =include csh timeslot_entry timeslot_icons A handle is the area in a calendar entry between the timeslot and the resize bar. The handle serves a number of purposes. Its primary function is to allow you to move an entry to a different timeslot by holding MB1 down on the entry and dragging the entry to the new location. When entries overlap, clicking on a handle causes that entry to pop to the front. A handle also displays the icons that are associated with the entry (for example, an alarm icon is displayed if you have an alarm set for the entry). Most of the icons are set from the Entry Editor.
Icons
=title Icons =include csh timeslot_entry timeslot_icons =INCLUDE overview options_menu customize_icon Icons are symbols that can be added to entries to act as mnemonics for the contents of the entry. The icons are displayed in the Entry Editor. Calendar attaches no meaning to the icons. They are for you to use as reminders of the content of a particular entry. The term "icon" also refers to the Calendar icon in the DECwindows icon box. You can customize this icon. For more information, see the help topic Customizing Icon Settings.
Mark
=Title Mark =Keyword mark =include overview edit_menu options_mark You can use the Mark menu item on the Edit menu to alter the display font of holidays, important personal days, or major project milestones. This makes special days visually distinguishable from other days in Calendar displays.
resize bar
=Title Resize Bar =Keyword reduce expand resize bar entry =INCLUDE overview functions_1 entry_resize =include overview functions_1 =INCLUDE overview options_menu customize_day =INCLUDE overview options_menu customize_day resize_size =include overview options_menu customize_day timeslot_size The resize bar (a dumbbell shape in Calendar entries) is used to expand or reduce the size of an entry. Click on the upper "weight" to drag the top edge of the entry, or the lower "weight" to drag the bottom edge. Drag the entry edge to the earlier or later time you desire. The resize bar can be set to finer time increments than those indicated in the Day view. This is useful if, for example, you charge for time in 3 minute increments, but like to keep a more reasonable 15 minute interval on the display. You can set the increment used by the resize bar from the Day view dialog box. See the help topic Choosing a Time Interval for the Resize Bar.
significant
=TITLE Significant Entries =INCLUDE overview options_menu customize_day italicizing_day =INCLUDE overview options_menu Days containing at least one entry or Day Note are displayed (flagged) in a different font in Month views. You cannot flag particular entries or Day Notes. This feature is preset in the standard Calendar and is useful if you have relatively few entries. To switch off flagging in the Month view, use the Flag options in the Day view dialog box. An alternative method of flagging significant days is to choose Special from the Mark submenu, which is accessible from the Edit menu. This method of flagging does not require the day to have any entries or Day Notes, and it can be set for any number of specific days.
Timeslot
=Title Timeslot =Keyword timeslot =include CSH timeslot_entry =INCLUDE glossary resize_bar =INCLUDE overview options_menu A timeslot is the unit of time in the Day view. Timeslots can be set to 5, 15, 30, or 60 minutes. Multiple timeslots can be selected and joined to create entries that last longer than the default timeslot. You can set finer intervals of time for entries (down to 1 minute) with the resize bar. By default, the interval used by the resize bar is 5 minutes, but you can modify it in the Day view dialog box.
history
=Title Brief History of the Gregorian Calendar =Keyword gregorian calendar background =INCLUDE overview As decreed by Pope Gregory XIII, October 4, 1582, was followed by October 15, 1582. Thus ended the 1600-year reign of the Julian calendar upon which the Gregorian calendar is based, and thus began the calendar which DECwindows Calendar uses to measure time. Calendars based on sun and moon movement were used even by the ancients, but the first reasonably accurate one was the 365¼-day cycle calculated by the Greek Sosigenes. This was the calendar authorized by Julius Caesar in 46 BC. The Julian calendar (not to be confused with the Julian period; see below) had 3 years of 365 days each, followed by a fourth year of 366 days. The 365¼-day cycle was more accurately defined in 730 AD by the Venerable Bede, an Anglo-Saxon monk, who shortened the time by 11 minutes, 14 seconds. This accumulates to a whole day's error every 128 years, or a little more than 3 days every 400 years. This being the Dark Ages, nothing was done to adjust the Calendar, despite Roger Bacon sending a note to Pope Clement IV, informing him of the drifting of the date for the vernal equinox. Later, Pope Sixtus IV did become convinced that another reform was needed and called the German astronomer Regiomontanus to Rome to advise him. Unfortunately, Regiomontanus died of the plague shortly thereafter and the plans died with him. Thursday, October 4, 1582 was the next time the calendar was adjusted. This last day of the Julian calendar was followed by Friday, October 15. So began the Gregorian calendar that we use today, named after Pope Gregory XIII. He commissioned the mathematician Father Christopher Clavius, S.J., to do the necessary calculations, having been authorized to reform the calendar by the Council of Trent in 1545. The Vatican librarian Aloysius Giglio provided a formula for long-range accuracy. He suggested that every fourth year be a leap year, except for century years that are not divisible by 400. Thus 1700, 1800, and 1900 would not be leap years, but 2000 would be, because 2000 is divisible by 400. This rule eliminated 3 leap years every 4 centuries, making the calendar sufficiently correct for most ordinary purposes.

political background Europe
=Title Political Acceptance in Europe =Keyword background politics europe =include history political_background_world =include history religious_background =include history =include history calendar_background_julian =include history calendar_background_decwin The new calendar was adopted at once by France, Spain, Italy, Portugal, and Luxembourg. By 1584, Belgium, parts of the Netherlands, Switzerland, and most Catholic German states had joined, and by 1587, so had Hungary. It was not until 1699-1700 that these countries were joined by the rest of the Netherlands, Denmark, and the Protestant German countries. By the time the British imposed the calendar on all its possessions, in 1752, 11 days needed to be lost. September 2, 1752, was thus decreed to be followed by September 14. In addition, New Year's day was moved back from March 25 to January 1. (For example, before, March 24, 1700 had been followed by March 25, 1701). Among other repercussions, this moved Washington's birth date from February 11, 1731, to February 22, 1732. The following year, 1753, Sweden too adopted the calendar. In 1793, the French Revolutionary government adopted a calendar of 12 months of 30 days each, with 5 extra days in September (6 on leap years). The Gregorian calendar was reinstated in 1806 by Napoleon.
political background world
=Title Political Acceptance World Wide =Keyword background politics world =include history religious_background =include history political_background_europe =include history =include history calendar_background_julian =include history calendar_background_decwin Adoption of the calendar in countries outside Europe and its Crown possessions occurred much later, and often in conjunction with political upheaval: Japan in 1873, Egypt in 1875, China in 1912, and Turkey in 1917. In 1918, Russia's revolutionary government decreed that January 31, 1918, would be followed by February 14, 1918.
religious background
=Title Religious Acceptance Worldwide =Keyword background religion world =include history =include history political_background_world =include history political_background_europe =include history calendar_background_julian =include history calendar_background_decwin Religious institutions in general seemed to be more reluctant to take to the new system. German Protestants used the old calendar until 1776, three quarters of a century after their countries had adopted the Gregorian system. Sweden retained the old Easter rules for 90 years after switching to the Gregorian calendar, and many Middle Eastern Christian sects still retain the Julian calendar. The Russian Orthodox Church still follows the Julian system.
calendar background julian
=Title Julian Period =Keyword background julian calendar =include history =include history calendar_background_decwin Astronomers use the Julian period because it is convenient to express long time intervals in days rather than months, weeks and years. It was devised by Joseph Scaliger, in 1582, who named it after his father Julius, thus creating the confusion between the Julian (Caesar) calendar and the Julian (Scaliger) period. Julian Day 1 began at 12:00 noon, January 1, 4713 BC. This date was thought by some to correspond approximately to the beginning of the universe. Certainly it predated any known astronomical events known in the 16th century without resorting to negative times. Scaliger decided on the actual date on the grounds that it was the most recent coincidence of three major chronological cycles: - The 28-year solar cycle, after which dates in the Julian calendar (for example September 27) return to the same days of the week (for example Tuesday). - The 19-year lunar cycle, after which phases of the moon return to the same dates of the year. - The 15-year indiction cycle, used in ancient Rome for tax regulation. It takes 7980 years to complete the cycle. Noon of January 1, 1988, marks the beginning of Julian Day 2447161. The Julian period is also of interest because of its use as a time base by the VMS operating system.

or:
Why VMS regards November 17, 1858, as the beginning of
time...
The modified Julian date adopted by SAO (Smithsonian
Astrophysical Observatory) for satellite tracking is
Julian Day 2400000, which turns out to be November 17,
1858.
SAO started tracking satellites with an 8K (nonvirtual)
36-bit IBM 704 in 1957, when Sputnik went into orbit.
The Julian day was 2435839 on January 1, 1957. This is
11225377 octal, which was too big to fit into an 18-bit
field. With only 8K of memory, the 14 bits left over by
keeping the Julian date in its own 36-bit word would
have been wasted. They also needed the fraction of the
current day (for which 18 bits gave enough accuracy),
so it was decided to keep the number of days in the
left 18 bits and the fraction of a day in the right 18
bits of one word.
Eighteen bits allows the truncated Julian day (the SAO
day) to grow as large as 262143, which from November
17, 1858, allowed for 7 centuries. Possibly, the date
could only grow as large as 131071 (using 17 bits), but
this still covers 3 centuries and leaves the
possibility of representing negative time. The 1858
date preceded the oldest star catalogue in use at SAO,
which also avoided having to use negative time in any
of the satellite tracking calculations.
ultrix time
=TITLE Ultrix Time Origins =Keyword background ultrix =include history calendar_background_julian julian_and_vms =include history =include history calendar_background_julian =include history calendar_background_decwin The beginning of time for Ultrix systems is: Thursday January 1 00:00:00 1970 The reason for this date being chosen is that this was the year that UNIX, the "father" of Ultrix, was first released. Thus dates prior to 1970 are BU; 1970 and later dates are AU.
calendar background decwin
=TITLE History and DECwindows Calendar =INCLUDE history =include history calendar_background_julian =include history political_background_europe =include history political_background_world =include history religious_background If you read the topics concerning the political and religious acceptance of the Gregorian calendar, you will see that there is a problem: there are many dates for the conversion from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar. For example, the British (and therefore the Americans) converted in September 1752, so British and American Calendar users might expect Calendar to show September 2, 1752, to be followed by September 14, 1752. However, a Russian user would expect to see this jump between January 31, 1918, and February 14, 1918. DECwindows Calendar conforms to the date of the original decree, therefore no days have been lost since Friday, October 15, 1582, nor since the beginning of DECwindows Calendar time: January 1, 1600. Thus for everyone except for users from the majority of the Catholic European countries, which all converted before this date, there will appear to be an "error" in Calendar, where the conversion actually took place. This generalization was felt to be acceptable for an application not specifically designed for historians.

=TITLE Notes for Users Upgrading from Calendar V1.0 =KEYWORD upgrade, Note, V1 =INCLUDE overview This topic lists problems and solutions specific to users who are upgrading from Calendar V1.0 to Calendar V2.0. - In V1.0, clicking on an entry timeslot opened that entry so that it could be edited or deleted. In V2.0, the ability to stack entries allows you to click on the timeslot in an existing entry and open a new, overlapping entry in the same timeslot. SOLUTION: To edit or delete an existing entry, click in the text area, NOT in the timeslot. To create a new entry, click on the timeslot. Clicking on a timeslot that is already occupied by an entry causes a new entry to be created, stacked "on top of" the old one.

For instance, a group secretary might create a calendar of events that are of interest to an entire group. Group members could open the calendar in a separate view when scheduling events in their own calendars. Because the Open menu item can open a calendar in which you are not allowed to make entries, you can only "share" such calendars informally. Choose the Open... menu item on the File menu to use a different or additional calendar. You are asked for the name of the calendar you want to open and whether it should replace the current calendar or appear in a separate calendar window. The newly opened calendar presents a Month view containing the current day. By default, Calendar changes the font of days in the Month view that contain an entry or a Day Note. Thus, you can tell at a glance which days contain such entries. Use the Flag options in the Day view dialog box (accessible from the Customize menu) to disable this feature. Special days are also distinguished in Month views. To set special days, choose Special from the Edit menu's Mark submenu. You cannot edit the Month view.

The Day view provides times of day, with timeslots for entries, and this month and next month's calendar. Unlike a traditional calendar, the Day view features a digital clock, which has several features that affect the behavior of the Day view. The Day view also has vertical bars beside the timeslots; these bars indicate working hours and appointments.

In addition to showing the time, the clock allows the current Day view to scroll automatically (autoscroll). The clock has no border when it is autoscrolling. To start autoscrolling, click on the clock. The timeslots that are visible in the Day view adjust so that the current time appears within the first timeslot. Thereafter, as a timeslot passes, it scrolls off the top of the window, which keeps the view as up to date as possible. The clock performs this function for only the current day. If the Day view is not the current day, clicking on the clock first replaces the displayed day with the current day. Autoscrolling then takes place as usual. To stop this autoscrolling, move the timeslots by any other method, for example, clicking on the scroll bar. Autoscrolling is turned off at the end of the day. If you are making an entry in a timeslot when it is due to be scrolled, the entry does not "disappear." The scroll mechanism waits until the next interval is over and then catches up.
