Advance

 WPS Advance

Moves the cursor to the next character, and sets the direction of the
buffer to FORWARD (right and down).

Key: The WPS keypad defines KP0 as the Advance key.

 Usage notes:

o If the cursor is bound, then from the end of a line it moves to the
start of the next line. (Setting the WPS keypad automatically enables
    bound cursor motion.)

o If the cursor is free, you can move it anywhere in the buffer, whether
characters are already there or not. For example, you can move right
    of the right margin.

Adv Scroll

 WPS Scroll Advance

Scrolls vertically, moving forward until you halt scrolling or reach the
 bottom of the buffer.

 Steps:

    1. Press the WPS Scroll Advance key (GOLD-KP0).

    2. To halt scrolling, press any key. The normal function of that key
is then executed. Typically, you press the WPS Halt key (GOLD-`).

 Usage notes:

o If the cursor is bound, it moves to the corresponding position on the
line where you halt the scrolling or to the end of buffer. (Setting
the WPS keypad automatically enables bound cursor.)

o If the cursor is free, it moves down in the same column, regardless of
whether text is there or not. Conceptually, the cursor remains in the
same position on the screen while the buffer scrolls down.

Append

 EDT Append

Cuts a range or box and adds it to the end of what you last cut or copied
or appended, if any. You can then paste all of this text elsewhere.

 Steps:

    1. Select or find the text to append (see help on Ranges And Boxes).

    2. Press the EDT Append key (KP9).

    3. To append more text, repeat steps 1 and 2.
To paste the text, use INSERT HERE, PASTE, or BOX PASTE.

 Usage notes:

o In editing a box, Append works like BOX CUT, usually padding the area
with spaces to keep the column alignment of text to the right of the
box. If you used SET BOX NOPAD, cutting a box from insert-mode buffer
makes text to the right of the box "collapse" to the left, closing the
    gap.

o If you used SET BOX SELECT, then Append uses the start and end of a
found range as diagonally opposite corners of a box.

o If a found range is at the end of a selection, Append cuts and appends
the selection, but not the found text.

o Depending on your setting, the text is appended to EVE's Insert Here
buffer or the DECwindows clipboard. Default is SET NOCLIPBOARD, which
    uses the Insert Here buffer.

o To view the contents of the Insert Here buffer---for example, to check
what you last copied or removed and what you appended---use the command
    BUFFER INSERT HERE.

o Appending a range adds the text to the end of the text in the Insert
Here buffer or the clipboard. Appending a box adds the box at the end
of the Insert Here buffer or the clipboard, to keep the box shape of
    the removed text.

o If the buffer is unmodifiable, Append copies and appends the box or
    range without removing it.

Backspace

 EDT Start Of Line (Backspace)

Moves the cursor back to the start of a line.

Keys: The EDT keypad defines both CTRL/H and F12. On VT100-series
terminals, BACKSPACE and CTRL/H are the same.

 Usage notes:

o If you are already at the start of a line, moves to the start of the
previous line, if there is one. Thus, you can repeat the key until you
reach the top of the buffer.

o Using SET FUNCTION KEYS DECWINDOWS redefines F12 as START OF LINE (the
EVE command), overriding the EDT definition.

END OF LINE MOVE BY LINE START OF LINE TOP

Backup

 WPS Backup

Moves the cursor to the previous character, and sets the direction of the
buffer to REVERSE (left and up).

Key: The WPS keypad defines KP1 as the Backup key.

 Usage notes:

o If the cursor is bound, then from the start of a line it moves to the
end of the previous line, if there is one. (Setting the WPS keypad
    automatically enables bound cursor motion.)

o If the cursor is free, you can move it anywhere in the buffer, whether
characters are already there or not. For example, if the left margin
is greater than 1, you can move left of the left margin, which is
useful for creating lists and tables.

Back Scroll

 WPS Scroll Backup

Scrolls vertically, moving back until you halt scrolling or until reach
 the top of the buffer.

 Steps:

    1. Press the WPS Scroll Backup key (GOLD-KP1).

    2. To halt scrolling, press any key. The normal function of that key
is then executed. Typically, you press the WPS Halt key (GOLD-`).

 Usage notes:

o If the cursor is bound, it moves to the corresponding position on the
line where you halt the scrolling or to the top of buffer. (Setting
the WPS keypad automatically enables bound cursor.)

o If the cursor is free, it moves up in the same column, regardless of
whether text is there or not. Conceptually, the cursor remains in the
same position on the screen while the buffer scrolls up.

Character

 EDT Character

Moves the cursor a character at a time in the current direction.

The effect is similar to using MOVE RIGHT or MOVE LEFT (or pressing the
right and left arrows) except the cursor is bound to the flow or shape of
your text, even if your setting is free cursor.

 Steps:

    1. To set the direction, use FORWARD (KP4) or REVERSE (KP5).

    2. Press the EDT Character key (KP3).

 Usage notes:

o In forward direction, moves right one character, or if there is no next
character, to the start of the next line.

o In reverse direction, moves left one character, or if there is no
previous character, to the end of the previous line.

o For continuous movement, you can hold down or repeat KP3 until you
reach the bottom or top of the buffer.

ChngCase

 EDT ChngCase

Changes the case of a range, box, or single character. Uppercase letters
become lowercase; lowercase letters become uppercase.

 Steps:

    1. Optionally, select or find the text to change (see help on Ranges
And Boxes), or put the cursor on the character you want to change.

    2. Press the EDT ChngCase key (GOLD-KP1).

 Usage notes:

o If you do not select or find text, ChngCase changes the case of the
character the cursor is on (if it is a letter), and then moves to the
    next character.

o If you used SET BOX SELECT, the case change uses the start and end of a
found range as diagonally opposite corners of a box.

o If a found range is at the end of a selection, the case change works on
the selection, but not on the found text.

Continue Search Key

 WPS Continue Search

Searches for another occurrence of a string already entered with FIND,
REPLACE, or WILDCARD FIND, and highlights the found text.

 Steps:

    1. To set the direction, you can press the WPS Advance key (KP0) for
forward direction, or WPS Backup key (KP1) for reverse direction.

    2. Press the WPS Continue Search key (GOLD-. on the keyboard).

 Usage notes:

o If an occurrence is found, EVE puts the cursor at start of the found
text, and highlights the found text in bold video.

o If there is no occurrence in the current direction, EVE automatically
searches in the other direction. If there is an occurrence in that
direction, EVE asks if you want to go there---press RETURN for Yes, or
    type No and press RETURN.

o To edit the found text, use a command or key that works on a range or
box, such as COPY, BOX CUT, FILL, REMOVE, or UPPERCASE (see help on
Ranges And Boxes). If you used SET BOX SELECT, an editing operation on
the found range uses the start and end of the range as diagonally
    opposite corners of a box.

o To cancel the highlighting, move the cursor out of the found range,
or use RESET (with the WPS keypad, press GOLD-PERIOD on the keypad).

Continue Search Select

 WPS Continue Search/Select

Searches for another occurrence of a string already entered with FIND,
REPLACE, or WILDCARD FIND---and if it is found, selects the text.

 Steps:

    1. To set the direction, you can press the WPS Advance key (KP0) for
forward direction, or WPS Backup key (KP1) for reverse direction.

    2. Press the WPS Continue Search/Select key (GOLD-? or GOLD-/).

 Usage notes:

o If an occurrence is found, EVE puts the cursor at start of the found
text and selects the found text---canceling any other selection. If
you used SET BOX SELECT, the selection is a box.

o If there is no occurrence in the current direction, EVE automatically
searches in the other direction. If there is an occurrence in that
direction, EVE asks if you want to go there---press RETURN for Yes, or
    type No and press RETURN.

o To edit the selection, use a command or key that works on a range or
box, such as COPY, BOX CUT, FILL, REMOVE, or UPPERCASE. See help on
    Ranges And Boxes.

o Moving the cursor extends or shrinks the selection. To find the next
occurence---without canceling the selection---use FIND NEXT or press
the WPS Continue Search key (GOLD-. on the keyboard).

o To cancel the selection, use SELECT, BOX SELECT, or RESET.

Delete Beginning Sentence

 WPS Delete Beginning Sentence

Erases the beginning of the current sentence or, if you are between
 sentences, erases the previous sentence.

 Steps:

    1. Put the cursor where you want to erase the sentence
        (see example below).

    2. Press the WPS Delete Beginning Sentence key (GOLD-CTRL/J,
        GOLD-LINEFEED, or GOLD-F13).

 Usage notes:

o "Sentences" are bounded by a period, question mark, or exclamation
point. Periods in RUNOFF commands (such as .Blank) or decimal numbers
(such as 3.14) are treated as sentence boundaries.

o Depending on your cursor position, Delete Beginning Sentence erases all
or part of a sentence, as in the following example:

There is no road to peace. Peace is the road.
                                 | | |
                                [1] [2] [3]

Cursor position Effects of Delete Beginning Sentence
       ---------------------------------------------------------------
[1] Between sentences Erases all of the previous sentence
(whitespace) ("There is no road to peace.")

[2] Start of a sentence Erases that character ("P" in "Peace")

[3] Within a sentence Erases left of the cursor to the start
of the sentence (erasing "Peace is")

o To insert what you erased, use RESTORE SENTENCE.

o Deleting or restoring a sentence does not rewrap the paragraph.
To reformat text, use FILL (with the WPS keypad, press GOLD-KP5).

Delete Character

 EDT/WPS Delete Character

Erases the character that the cursor is on (same as ERASE CHARACTER).

 Keys: EDT Keypad WPS Keypad
        ------------------------------
        COMMA PF4

 Steps:

    1. Put the cursor on the character you want to erase.

    2. Press the Delete Character key (see key list above).

 Usage notes:

o Delete Character depends on the mode of the buffer, shown in the status
line. In insert mode, it erases the character, causing text to the
right to move left. In overstrike mode, it replaces the character with
a space. To change the mode of the buffer, press CTRL/A (see help on
    CHANGE MODE).

o At the end of a line---regardless of the mode---Delete Character erases
only the line break (carriage return), causing the next line (if any)
to move up. This is useful to to join paragraphs for FILL.

o To put back the erased character, use RESTORE CHARACTER (with the EDT
keypad, press GOLD-COMMA), which is also mode-sensitive.

    2. Press the EDT Delete Line key (PF4).

 Usage notes:

o At the end of a line, Delete Line erases only the line break (carriage
return), causing the next line, if any, to move up. This is useful to
    join paragraphs for FILL.

o To insert what you erased, use RESTORE LINE (with the EDT keypad, press
    GOLD-PF4).

        CTRL/J or F13 F13

 Steps:

    1. Put the cursor to the right of the text you want to erase.

    2. Press the Delete Previous Word key (see key list above).

    cursor position, as follows:

Cursor position Effects of Delete Previous Word
    --------------------------------------------------------------
Start of a word or Erases the previous word, including the
    between words trailing whitespace.

Elsewhere in a word Erases left of the cursor to the start of
the current word. For example, if you are
on the "t" in "Digital," you erase "Digi."

Start of a line Erases the line break (carriage return) for
the previous line, causing the current line
to move up. Useful to join paragraphs for FILL.

o To insert what you erased, use RESTORE WORD (with the EDT keypad, press
    GOLD-MINUS).

o On VT100-series terminals, LINEFEED and CTRL/J are the same.

causing the current line to move up. This is useful if the previous
line is blank, so you join paragraphs for FILL.

o To insert what you erased, use RESTORE LINE (with the EDT keypad, press
    GOLD-PF4).

    character)

Elsewhere in a word Erases from the current character to the end
of the word. For example, if you are on the
"g" in "Digital," you erase "gital," including
                           the trailing whitespace.

Del EOL

 EDT Delete EOL

Erases a line, starting with the current character, until the line break
(carriage return). This leaves the cursor at start of a blank line.

 Steps:

    1. Put the cursor where you want to erase text---that is,
on the first character of the text you want to erase.

    2. Press the EDT Delete EOL key (GOLD-KP2).

 Usage notes:

o At the end of a line, Delete EOL erases the line break for that line---
and erases the text of the next line, if any, until the next line
    break.

o To insert what you erased, use RESTORE LINE (with the EDT keypad, press
    GOLD-PF4).

 Related topics:

EDT Line

 EDT Line

Moves the cursor a line at a time in the current direction---always going
to the start of a line.

 Steps:

    1. To set the direction, use FORWARD (KP4) or REVERSE (KP5).

    2. Press the EDT Line key (KP0).

 Usage notes:

o In forward direction, moves to the start of the next line, if any.

o In reverse direction, moves to the start of the current line or to the
start of the previous line, if any.

o For continuous movement, you can hold down or repeat KP0 until you
reach the bottom or top of the buffer.

EDT Replace

 EDT Replace

Replaces a range or box with the text you copied or removed.

 Steps:

    1. Copy or cut the text you want to use. Typically, you
press SELECT, type the text, and then press REMOVE.

    2. Select or find the text to replace (see help on Ranges And Boxes).

    3. Press the EDT Replace key (GOLD-KP9). You can repeat
steps 2 and 3 to make another replacement elsewhere.

 Usage notes:

o The replacement text is case-exact---that is, EDT Replace does not
change the case of the replacement text to match the case of the search
string. To have the replacement text match the case of the search
    string, use the REPLACE command.

o Depending on your setting, the replacement text is copied from EVE's
Insert Here buffer or the DECwindows clipboard. Default is SET
NOCLIPBOARD, which uses the Insert Here buffer.

o If the Insert Here buffer or the clipboard is empty, EDT Replace
deletes the highlighted text without inserting anything. To check the
contents of the Insert Here buffer, use the command BUFFER INSERT HERE.

o With box editing, EDT Replace works like BOX CUT and BOX PASTE---useful
for replacing text in a list or table. For more information, see help
on BOX CUT and BOX PASTE.

FndNxt

 EDT FndNxt

Searches for another occurrence of a string already entered with FIND,
REPLACE, or WILDCARD FIND, and highlights the found text (similar to
 FIND NEXT).

 Steps:

    1. To set the direction, use FORWARD (KP4) or REVERSE (KP5).

    2. Press the EDT FndNxt key (PF3).

If you used SET BOX SELECT, an editing operation on
the found range uses the start and end of the range as diagonally
    opposite corners of a box.

o To cancel the highlighting, move the cursor out of the found range, or
use RESET (with the EDT keypad, press GOLD-PERIOD).

o If there is no search string---for example, if you have not yet done a
FIND---then FndNxt moves the cursor to the nearest end of line.

Halt

 WPS Halt

Halts scrolling caused by another operation, such as the WPS Scroll Backup
key (GOLD-KP1) or WPS Scroll Advance key (GOLD-KP0).

Key: The WPS keypad defines GOLD-` as the Halt key.

 Usage notes:

o You can also halt scrolling by pressing any key---whether a typing key
or a function key. However, this executes the function assigned to
that key, whereas pressing the WPS Halt key simply stops the scrolling
without inserting text or making any other changes.

o Pressing the WPS Halt key also ends ("remembers") a LEARN sequence, if
one is active. See help on the REMEMBER command (CTRL/R).

Insert Date Time

 WPS Insert Date/Time

Inserts the current date and time at your current position.

 Steps:

    1. Put the cursor where you want to insert the date and time.

    2. Press the WPS Insert Date/Time key (GOLD-\ or GOLD-|).

 Usage notes:

o The resulting text looks like this: 31-AUG-1990 11:03:49

o The cursor appears to the right of the time field. Thus, to erase the
time, leaving the date, use DELETE (the <X] key) or the WPS Delete
Previous Word key (CTRL/J, LINEFEED, or F13).

o The date and time are inserted whether the mode of the buffer is insert
or overstrike. Existing text is pushed to the right. Depending on
where you are on the line, your text may go past the right margin and
even out of view (depending on the width of the window). To reformat
your text, use FILL (with the WPS keypad, GOLD-KP5).

Lower Case

 WPS Lower Case

Makes one or more letters lowercase, and sets the direction to FORWARD.

 Steps:

    1. Optionally, select or find the text to change (see help on Ranges
And Boxes), or put the cursor on the character you want to change.

    2. Press the WPS Lower Case key (GOLD-KP3).

 Usage notes:

o If you do not select or find text, WPS Lower Case makes the current
character lowercase (if it is a letter), and then moves to the next
character. To continue making characters lowercase, use these WPS
    keys:

       Line ........... KP2 or GOLD-KP2 Sentence ... KP7 or GOLD-KP7
       Word ........... KP4 or GOLD-KP4 Page ....... PF2
       Tab Position ... KP8 Bottom ..... GOLD-B
       Paragraph ...... KP5 Top ........ GOLD-T

o To cancel this effect---so you can move the cursor without changing
case---press any other cursor-movement key, such as <-- or the WPS
Advance key (KP0). To reverse the effects, use the WPS Upper Case key
    (KP3).

o If you used SET BOX SELECT, the case change uses the start and end of a
found range as diagonally opposite corners of a box.

o If a found range is at the end of a selection, the case change works on
the selection, but not on the found text.

Next Screen

 EDT Next Screen

Scrolls vertically to show the next section of text---roughly 75% of the
 window size.

Key: The EDT keypad defines NEXT SCREEN on the mini keypad.

 Usage notes:

o If the cursor is free (which is the default setting), it moves down in
the same column on the screen regardless of whether text is there or
not. Conceptually, the cursor remains in the same position on the
screen while the buffer scrolls down.

o If the cursor is bound, it moves down to the corresponding line
positions, depending on the shape of your text.

o For continuous movement, you can hold down or repeat NEXT SCREEN until
you reach the bottom of the buffer.

Open Line

 EDT Open Line

Starts a new line at your current position, without moving the cursor.

 Steps:

    1. Put the cursor where you want to break the line.

    2. Press the EDT Open Line key (GOLD-KP0).

 Usage notes:

o Open Line is useful to create room for adding text in the middle of a
line or paragraph, or to add a blank line as a paragraph boundary for
    FILL.

o The effect is similar to pressing RETURN except the cursor does not
move. Text beginning with the current character is pushed down,
starting a new line at the current left margin.

Page Marker

 WPS Page Marker

Inserts a page marker or "soft" page break, putting it at the start of a
 line by itself.

A soft page break is a form feed followed by the null character, appearing
as a small FF and small NL. Soft page breaks are deleted or relocated by
PAGINATE (WPS GOLD-PF2). By contrast, a "hard" page break is a form feed
only, typically done with INSERT PAGE BREAK (CTRL/L or WPS GOLD-N).

 Steps:

    1. Put the cursor where you want to start a new page (soft break).

    2. Press the WPS Page Marker key (GOLD-P).

EVE inserts the page break at the start of a line by itself and moves the
cursor to the start of the next line, as follows:

Cursor position Effects of WPS Page Marker
    ----------------------------------------------------------------
Start of a line Inserts a soft break and then does a RETURN.
    of text

Start of a Inserts a soft break and moves the cursor to the
blank line start of the next line---without doing a RETURN.

Elsewhere on Does a RETURN to start a new line, inserts a soft
a line break, and then does another RETURN.

Paragraph

 WPS Paragraph

Moves the cursor a paragraph at a time in the current direction.

 Steps:

    1. To set the direction, you can press the WPS Advance key (KP0) for
forward direction, or WPS Backup key (KP1) for reverse direction.

    2. Press the WPS Paragraph key (KP5).

 Usage notes:

o WPS Paragraph always moves to the start of a paragraph---in forward
direction, to the start of the next paragraph, if any; in reverse
direction, to the start of the current paragraph or previous paragraph.

o "Paragraphs" are bounded by any of the following:

       *  Blank line
       * Top or bottom of the buffer
       * Page break (form feed at the start of a line)
       * RUNOFF command (such as .BREAK;) at the start of a line
       * VAX DOCUMENT tag (such as <LE>) at the start of a line

o If there is no blank line or other paragraph boundary in the current
direction, moves to the top or bottom of the buffer.

o With the WPS keypad, pressing KP5 continues a WPS case change as
    follows:

    1. Press the WPS Lower Case key (GOLD-KP3) or WPS Upper Case
key (KP3) to change the case of a character.

    2. Press KP5 to continue the case change from the current character
until the start of a paragraph.

o To reformat the current paragraph, use FILL (with the WPS keypad, press
    GOLD-KP5).

Previous Screen

 EDT Previous Screen

Scrolls vertically to show the previous section of text---roughly 75% of
 the window size.

Key: The EDT keypad defines PREV SCREEN on the mini keypad.

 Usage notes:

o If the cursor is free (which is the default setting), it moves up in
the same column on the screen regardless of whether text is there or
not. Conceptually, the cursor remains in the same position on the
screen while the buffer scrolls up.

o If the cursor is bound, it moves up to the corresponding line
positions, depending on the shape of your text.

o For continuous movement, you can hold down or repeat PREV SCREEN until
you reach the top of the buffer.

Repeat

 EDT/WPS Repeat

Repeats the next command or keystroke as often as you specify, without
 your having to retype it.

 Steps:

    1. Press GOLD (usually, PF1) and type the number of
times you want the operation repeated.

    2. Type a command or press a key that you want repeated---
whether a typing key, such as the dash or hyphen, or a
function key, such as the Delete Word key or down arrow.

 Usage notes:

o To cancel a pending repeat count---for example, if you mistakenly press
a GOLD-number sequence---use RESET (with the EDT or WPS keypad, press
    GOLD-PERIOD on the keypad).

o You cannot use GOLD-number sequences to repeat the following keys:

       DELETE key (<X])
       EDT SpecIns key (GOLD-KP3)
WPS Paste keys (COMMA, GOLD-COMMA, INSERT HERE)

o To halt a repeating operation, press CTRL/C. However, if you are using
keystroke journaling (instead of buffer-change journaling), CTRL/C is
not recorded in the keystroke journal file. If you use CTRL/C, you
should immediately exit, to save your edits. Otherwise, if the system
fails, you may not be able to recover your work. This restriction does
not apply with buffer-change journaling, which is the EVE default.

Ruler

 WPS Ruler

Displays a ruler showing the margins, tab stops, and other settings of the
buffer, and lets you change these settings by pressing keys instead of
 having to type commands.

 Steps:

 1. Press the WPS Ruler key (GOLD-R). The ruler appears near the
bottom of the current window (just above the status line).

 2. Use the following keys to set margins, tabs, and so on, according
to your cursor position in the ruler:

     Key Effect with the Ruler
     ------------------------------------------------------------
I or i Sets the paragraph indent to this column.
L or l Sets the left margin to this column.
     P or P Same as I or i.
R or r Sets the right margin to this column.
S or s Saves settings, prompting for ruler number (0--9).
T or t Sets or deletes a tab stop at this column.
W or w Sets the WPS word wrap indent to this column.
SPACE Cancels an I, P, or W at this column.
1234567890 Recalls the ruler of that number.
!@#$%^&*() Saves settings in ruler number 0--9. For example,
type ! for ruler 1, @ for ruler 2, and so on.
HELP or GOLD-H Displays help on RULER KEYS.
RETURN or Exits from the ruler and resumes editing.

Search Right Angle

 WPS Search Right Angle (<>)

Searches the buffer for a right angle bracket (>).

 Steps:

    1. To set the direction, you can press the WPS Advance key (KP0) for
forward direction, or WPS Backup key (KP1) for reverse direction.

    2. Press the WPS Search Right Angle key (ENTER on the keypad).

 Usage notes:

o If a right angle bracket is found, the cursor moves to the character
that follows it. You can repeat the key to find the next right angle
    bracket.

o If there is no right angle bracket in the current direction, EVE
automatically searches in the other direction. If a right angle
bracket is found in the other direction, EVE asks if you want to go
there---press RETURN for Yes, or type No and press RETURN.

o If there is no right angle bracket in the buffer, the cursor does not
    move.

o Search Right Angle is independent of FIND---it does not change the
search string for FIND NEXT or the WPS Continue Search key.

Sect

 EDT Sect

Scrolls vertically a section at a time in the current direction---roughly
 75% of the window size.

 Steps:

    1. To set the direction, use FORWARD (KP4) or REVERSE (KP5).

    2. Press the EDT Sect key (KP8).

 Usage notes:

o If the cursor is free (which is the default setting), it moves up or
down in the same column on the screen regardless of whether text is
there or not. Conceptually, the cursor remains in the same position on
the screen while the buffer scrolls up or down.

o If the cursor is bound, it moves to the corresponding line positions,
depending on the shape of your text.

o For continuous movement, you can hold down or repeat KP8 until you
reach the bottom or top of the buffer.

Sentence

 WPS Sentence

Moves the cursor a sentence at a time in the current direction.

 Steps:

    1. To set the direction, you can press the WPS Advance key (KP0) for
forward direction, or WPS Backup key (KP1) for reverse direction.

    2. Press the WPS Sentence key (KP7 or GOLD-KP7).

 Usage notes:

o WPS Sentence always moves to the start of a sentence---in forward
direction, to the start of the next sentence; in reverse direction, to
the start of the previous sentence.

o "Sentences" are bounded by a period, question mark, or exclamation
point. Periods in RUNOFF commands (such as .B or .LE;) or in decimal
numbers (such as 3.14) are treated as sentence boundaries.

o If there are no sentence boundaries in the current direction, EVE tells
you it cannot find the end of a sentence and then moves to the top or
    bottom of the buffer.

o With the WPS keypad, press KP7 or GOLD-KP7 continues a WPS case change
    as follows:

    1. Press the WPS Lower Case key (GOLD-KP3) or WPS Upper Case
key (KP3) to change the case of a character.

    2. Press KP7 or GOLD-KP7 to continue the case change from the current
character until the start of a sentence.

o To delete a sentence, use the WPS Delete Beginning Sentence key
    (GOLD-CTRL/J or GOLD-F13).

SpecIns

 EDT SpecIns

Enters a character or control code according to its ASCII decimal value,
 specified by a GOLD-number sequence.

 Steps:

    1. Press GOLD (usually, PF1) and type the decimal value of the
character---such as 27 for escape or 181 for micro (ยต). The
number appears in reverse video in the command window.

    2. Press the EDT SpecIns key (GOLD-KP3).

 Usage notes:

o SpecIns depends on the mode of the buffer, shown in the status line.
In insert mode, the character you specify is inserted at the current
position, pushing text to the right. In overstrike mode, it replaces
the current character. To change the mode of the buffer, press CTRL/A
    (see help on CHANGE MODE).

o Some control codes appear as a backwards question mark, depending on
the type of terminal you are using.

o You cannot use GOLD-number sequences to repeat SpecIns, because a GOLD-
number sequence specifies the character code to be entered.

o You can also enter multinational characters, such as the micro, with
the COMPOSE CHARACTER key (on DECwindows or with DECterm, ALT/SPACE).
To enter control codes, such as escape, use CTRL/V (see help on QUOTE).

Subs

 EDT Subs

Replaces a range or box with text you copied or removed, and then searches
for another occurrence of the text you replaced so you can continue to
substitute---in effect, combining the EDT Replace and EDT FndNxt keys in a
 single key definition.

 Steps:

    1. Copy or remove the text you want to use. Typically, you
press SELECT, type the text, and then press REMOVE.

    2. Select or find the text to replace (see help on Ranges And Boxes).

    3. Press the EDT Subs key (GOLD-ENTER).

    4. After the substitution, EVE searches for another occurrence of the
text you replaced (effectively, doing a FIND NEXT). If the text is
found again, you can do the following:

        * To make another substitution (and continue the search),
press the Subs key (GOLD-ENTER) again.

        * To skip this occurrence (no substitution) and find
the next one, press the EDT FndNxt key (PF3).

        * To cancel the search, use RESET (with the EDT keypad,
           GOLD-PERIOD).

 Usage notes:

o The replacement text is case-exact---that is, Subs does not try to
match the replacement to the case of the search string. To have the
replacement text match the case of the search string, use the REPLACE
    command.

o Depending on your setting, the replacement text is copied from EVE's
Insert Here buffer or the DECwindows clipboard. Default is SET
NOCLIPBOARD, which uses the Insert Here buffer.

o If there is no text already in the Insert Here buffer or the clipboard,
Subs deletes the highlighted text without inserting anything. To check
the contents of the Insert Here buffer, use the command BUFFER INSERT
    HERE.

o With a box selection, or if you used SET BOX SELECT, Subs works like
BOX CUT and BOX PASTE---useful for replacing text in a list or table.
For more information, see help on BOX CUT and BOX PASTE.

Swap

 WPS Swap

Swaps the current character with the character that follows it.

This is useful for correcting spelling errors. For example, if you
mistakenly typed "teh" instead of "the," do the following steps:

    1. Put the cursor on the letter "e."

    2. Press the WPS Swap key (GOLD-ENTER).

This swaps or transposes the letters "e" and "h": the result is "the,"
with the cursor on the "e."

 Usage notes:

o If you are on the last text character of a line, Swap moves that
character to the start of the next line.

o If you are at the end of a line (carriage return), nothing is swapped
and the cursor does not move.

Tab Position

 WPS Tab Position

Moves the cursor to the next or previous tab character, depending on the
 current direction.

 Steps:

    1. To set the direction, you can press the WPS Advance key (KP0) for
forward direction, or WPS Backup key (KP1) for reverse direction.

    2. Press the WPS Tab Position key (KP8).

 Usage notes:

o If there is no tab character in the current direction, Tab Position
moves to the nearest start of line (same as the WPS Line key).

o The command SET TABS MOVEMENT makes the TAB key a cursor-movement key
---that is, to move to the next tab stop, regardless of whether there
are tab characters in the buffer.

o To make tab characters visible (appearing as a small HT), use the
command SET TABS VISIBLE. Default is INVISIBLE (tab characters appear
    as whitespace).

o With the WPS keypad, KP8 continues a WPS case change as follows:

    1. Press the WPS Lower Case key (GOLD-KP3) or WPS Upper Case
key (KP3) to change the case of a character.

    2. Press KP8 to continue the case change until the next or
        previous tab character.

Upper Case

 WPS Upper Case

Makes one or more letters uppercase, and sets the direction to FORWARD.

 Steps:

    1. Optionally, select or find the text to change (see help on Ranges
And Boxes), or put the cursor on the character you want to change.

    2. Press the WPS Upper Case key (KP3).

 Usage notes:

o If you do not select or find text, WPS Upper Case makes the current
character uppercase (if it is a letter), and then moves to the next
character. To continue making characters uppercase, use these WPS
    keys:

       Line ........... KP2 or GOLD-KP2 Sentence ... KP7 or GOLD-KP7
       Word ........... KP4 or GOLD-KP4 Page ....... PF2
       Tab Position ... KP8 Bottom ..... GOLD-B
       Paragraph ...... KP5 Top ........ GOLD-T

o To cancel this effect---so you can move the cursor without changing
case---press any other cursor-movement key, such as <-- or the WPS
Advance key (KP0). To reverse the effects, use the WPS Lower Case key
    (GOLD-KP3).

o If you used SET BOX SELECT, the case change uses the start and end of a
found range as diagonally opposite corners of a box.

o If a found range is at the end of a selection, the case change works on
the selection, but not on the found text.

WPS Copy

 WPS Copy

Copies a range or box without removing it, so you can paste it elsewhere
---optionally using a WPS-style alternate paste buffer.

 Steps:

    1. Select or find the text to copy (see help on Ranges and Boxes).

    2. Optionally, press GOLD and type a number from 1 through 9 to
        specify an alternate paste buffer.

    3. Press the WPS Copy key (GOLD-MINUS on the keypad).

 Usage notes:

o If you do not specify an alternate paste buffer, WPS Copy uses the
Insert Here buffer. WPS keys do not use the DECwindows clipboard.

o If you used SET BOX SELECT, then WPS Copy uses the start and end of a
found range as diagonally opposite corners of a box.

o If a found range is at the end of a selection, WPS Copy copies the
selection, but not on the found text.

o To paste the copied text, use the WPS Paste key (COMMA, GOLD-COMMA, or
    INSERT HERE).

o To check the contents your paste buffers, use SHOW SYSTEM BUFFERS and
select a buffer from the list---for example, the Insert Here buffer,
    Paste_Buffer_1, and so on.

WPS Cut

 WPS Cut

Cuts a range or box which you can paste elsewhere---optionally using a
WPS-style alternate paste buffer. In the Buffer List, deletes the buffer
whose name the cursor is on.

 Steps:

    1. Select or find the text to cut (see help on Ranges and Boxes).

    2. Optionally, press GOLD and a number from 1 through 9
to specify an alternate paste buffer.

    3. Press the WPS Cut key (MINUS on the keypad or REMOVE).

 Usage notes:

o If you do not specify an alternate paste buffer, WPS Cut uses the
Insert Here buffer. WPS keys do not use the DECwindows clipboard.

o Cutting a standard, linear range makes text after the range move left
or up, similar to erasing text. Text does not automatically rewrap.
To reformat your text, use FILL (with the WPS keypad, press GOLD-KP5).

o Cutting a box usually pads the area with spaces to keep the column
alignment of text to the right of the box, and pasting a box usually
overwrites existing text (such as the padding spaces). If you used SET
BOX NOPAD, cutting a box from insert-mode buffer makes text to the
right of the box "collapse" to the left, closing the gap, and pasting a
box pushes existing text to the right.

o If you used SET BOX SELECT, then WPS Cut uses the start and end of a
found range as diagonally opposite corners of a box.

o If a found range is at the end of a selection, WPS Cut removes the
selection, but not the found text.

o To paste the text, use the WPS Paste key (COMMA, GOLD-COMMA, or
    INSERT HERE).

o To check the contents your paste buffers, use SHOW SYSTEM BUFFERS and
select a buffer from the list---for example, the Insert Here buffer,
    Paste_Buffer_1, and so on.

o In the Buffer List, WPS Cut deletes a buffer without your having to
type the buffer name, as follows:

       1. Use SHOW BUFFERS to list the buffers you created.
       2. Put the cursor on the name of the buffer you want to delete.
       3. Press the WPS Cut to delete that buffer.

For more information, see help on DELETE BUFFER.

o If you use WPS Cut in an unmodifiable buffer, EVE does a WPS Copy
    instead.

WPS Line

 WPS Line

Moves the cursor a line at a time in the current direction.

 Steps:

    1. To set the direction, you can press the WPS Advance key (KP0) for
forward direction, or WPS Backup key (KP1) for reverse direction.

    2. Press the WPS Line key (KP2 or GOLD-KP2).

 Usage notes:

o WPS Line always moves to the start of a line---in forward direction, to
the start of the next line, if any; in reverse direction, to the start
of the current line or previous line.

o For continuous movement, you can hold down or repeat KP2 until you
reach the bottom or top of the buffer.

o With the WPS keypad, pressing KP2 or GOLD-KP2 continues a WPS case
    change as follows:

    1. Press the WPS Lower Case key (GOLD-KP3) or WPS Upper Case
key (KP3) to change the case of a character.

    2. Press KP2 to continue the case change from the current character
until the start of a line.

o When you use the WPS Ruler (GOLD-R), pressing KP2 moves to the start or
end of the ruler. See help on Ruler Keys.

WPS Paste

 WPS Paste

Pastes a range or box you cut or copied---optionally using a WPS-style
 alternate paste buffer.

 Steps:

    1. Put the cursor where you want to paste the text.

    2. Optionally, press GOLD and a number from 1 through 9 to specify
an alternate paste buffer if you used one for the copy or cut.

    3. Press the WPS Paste key (COMMA, GOLD-COMMA, or INSERT HERE).

 Usage notes:

o If you do not specify an alternate paste buffer, WPS Paste uses the
Insert Here buffer. WPS keys do not use the DECwindows clipboard.

o By default, WPS Paste inserts the text as a linear range, pushing
existing text to the right and down.

o SET BOX SELECT makes WPS Paste the same as BOX PASTE, usually
overwriting existing text. If you used SET BOX NOPAD, pasting a box
into an insert-mode buffer pushes existing text to the right of the box
---useful to add columns in the middle of a table.

o You cannot use GOLD-number sequences to repeat WPS Paste, because
GOLD-1 through GOLD-9 specify WPS alternate paste buffers.

o To check the contents your paste buffers, use SHOW SYSTEM BUFFERS and
select a buffer from the list---for example, the Insert Here buffer,
    Paste_Buffer_1, and so on.

o WPS Paste does not automatically rewrap text. Depending on where and
how much text you paste, your text may go past the right margin or even
out of view. To reformat your text, use FILL (with the WPS keypad,
    press GOLD-KP5).

WPS Replace

 WPS Replace

Replaces a range or box with the text you copied or removed. The
replacement text is copied from EVE's Insert Here buffer.

 Steps:

    1. Copy or cut the text you want to use. Typically, you press
SELECT, type the text, and then press the WPS Cut key.

    2. Select or find the text to replace (see help on Ranges And Boxes).

    3. Press the WPS Replace key (GOLD-" or GOLD-'). You can then
repeat steps 2 and 3 to make another replacement elsewhere.

 Usage notes:

o The replacement text is case-exact---that is, WPS Replace does not
change the case of the replacement text to match the case of the search
string. To have the replacement text match the case of the search
string, use the REPLACE command (with the WPS keypad, press GOLD-; or
    GOLD-:).

o If the Insert Here buffer is empty, WPS Replace deletes the highlighted
    text without inserting anything.

o To check the contents of the Insert Here buffer, use the command
    BUFFER INSERT HERE.

o With box editing, WPS Replace works like BOX CUT and BOX PASTE---useful
for replacing text in a list or table. For more information, see help
on BOX CUT and BOX PASTE.

WPS Word

 WPS Word

Moves the cursor a word at a time in the current direction (same as MOVE

 Steps:

    1. To set the direction, you can press the WPS Advance key (KP0) for
forward direction, or WPS Backup key (KP1) for reverse direction.

    2. Press the WPS Word key (KP4 or GOLD-KP4).

 Usage notes:

o WPS Word always moves to the start of a word---in forward direction, to
the start of the next word, if any; in reverse direction, to the start
of the current word or previous word, if any. Note that a series of
tabs is not treated as separate words.

o For continuous movement, you can hold down or repeat KP4 until you
reach the bottom or top of the buffer.

o With the WPS Keypad, pressing KP4 or GOLD-KP4 continues a WPS case
    change as follows:

    1. Press the WPS Lower Case key (GOLD-KP3) or WPS Upper Case
key (KP3) to change the case of a character.

    2. Press KP4 or GOLD-KP4 to continue the case change from the current
character until the start of a word.

o When you use the WPS Ruler (GOLR-R), pressing KP4 moves to the next or
previous indicator (I, L, P, R T, or W) in the ruler. See help on
    Ruler Keys.
