A drawer file name is a VMS file specification and has the same limitations. A drawer display name is limited to 39 characters and must begin with a letter or number. It can contain letters, numbers, underscores, hyphens, and dollar signs. The prefix MAIL$ is reserved by Mail and should not be used as a prefix for a drawer name. Display names are case sensitive; IMPORTANT and Important are not the same. Drawer file names are not case sensitive. Click on the OK button to create the drawer, or click on the Cancel button if you decide not to create the drawer.

To create a new message, point to New Message and release MB1. Mail opens a Create-Send window. In the Create-Send window you specify address information (who is to receive the message) and enter the text of the message.

To include a file in a mail message:
1. Choose File... from the Create-Send menu.
Mail displays a dialog box that lists the names of
all the files in the current directory.
2. Double click on the name of the file you want to
include.
Mail opens a Create-Send window and displays the
contents of the file.
4. Enter the address information and edit the file if
desired.
5. Click on the Send button to send the file.

Choosing File (no editor) allows you to send a
non-text message or a file that has been formatted
by an editor that does not exist on your system.
When you choose File (no editor), Mail displays a
dialog box that lists the names of all the files in
the current directory.
To send the file:
1. Double click on the name of the file you want to
include.
Mail opens a Create-Send window.
2. Click on a field in the envelope area of the
Create-Send window to enter address information.
The file name is displayed in the message area,
but the file cannot be edited.
3. Click on the Send button to send the message.

Choosing Draft File... from the Create-Send menu
allows you to continue working on a message that you
previously saved in a file.
To resume work on a message:
1. Choose Draft File... from the Create-Send menu.
A dialog box that lists the draft files in your
default draft directory is displayed.
2. Select the draft file to be edited or sent.
Mail opens a Create-Send window and displays
the contents of the file.
3. Enter the address information and edit the file if
desired.
4. Click on the Send button to send the file.

Choosing Reply from the main window's Create-Send
menu allows you to reply to a selected message.
To reply to a selected message:
1. Point to the Reply menu item and display the Reply
submenu.

or Using Selected Message.
Mail opens a Create-Send window and automatically
enters the address information for this reply.
Unless you chose Using a File (no editor)..., you
can edit this information if desired.
3. Enter the text of your reply.

You can change your User Attributes, Send Attributes, Deliver Attributes, Print Attributes, and Window Attributes. If you have chosen the Delete Drawer... menu item to display this dialog box, click on the OK button to delete the drawer. Click on the Cancel button to cancel the delete request. If multiple drawers are selected, you will be prompted to confirm or cancel each deletion separately. If you have chosen the Remove Drawer From Index... menu item to display this dialog box, click on the OK button to remove the drawer from your main window index. The drawer will not be deleted, and it can be returned to your main window with the Scan Mail Directory for Mail Drawers... or Add Drawer To Index... menu items.

The index indicates that the message has been deleted. The message is not actually deleted until the folder is closed. Until that time you can retrieve the message with the Undo Move/Delete item on the Edit menu.

=TITLE main_deliverMail_button =TITLE Delivering Mail =INCLUDE read_overview read_overview_multiple =KEYWORD Deliver Clicking on the Deliver Mail button adds new messages to your INBOX folder and updates the list of new messages. If you click on Deliver Mail while reading a message in the INBOX, Mail will close the Read window before delivering your mail. If you are reading a message in the INBOX in a Read window other than the default Read window, Mail will not be able to deliver your messages. Mail cannot be delivered if you are replying to a message in the INBOX.

Click on the OK button to save the profile settings. Click on the Cancel button if you decide not to change the profile settings.

If the option is toggled on, a message is moved to the MAIL folder after it is read. If the MAIL folder does not exist, it is created. This option causes messages to be moved immediately. If you delete or move the message, the delete or move operation will not be completed until the deliver folder is closed. The message is held in the MAIL folder until the delivery folder is closed and the MAIL folder is reopened. Click on the OK button to save the profile settings. Click on the Cancel button if you decide not to change the profile settings.

Pop-up menu actions always affect the object on which MB2 is positioned. Pop-up menu actions do not affect other objects, even if they are selected. Menu items that are dim are not available at this time. When you perform some action, such as opening the drawer, the menu item becomes available.

=TITLE main_delete =TITLE Deleting Objects =INCLUDE main_edit_menu main_undoMoveOrDelete Choosing Delete from the Edit menu deletes selected messages. The index is updated to show which messages have been marked for deletion. Messages are not actually deleted until the folder is closed. You can reverse the delete operation with Undo Move/Delete. When the folder is closed, the messages are deleted. Deleted messages are moved to the WASTEBASKET. You can retrieve deleted messages by opening the WASTEBASKET and moving the message to a folder. When the WASTEBASKET is emptied, the messages are permanently deleted and cannot be recovered.

A dialog box is displayed in which you enter the file name and display name of the drawer to be created. A drawer file name is a VMS file specification and has the same limitations. A drawer display name is limited to 39 characters and must begin with a letter or number. It can contain letters, numbers, underscores, hyphens, and dollar signs. The prefix MAIL$ is reserved by Mail and should not be used as a prefix for a drawer name. Display names are case sensitive; IMPORTANT and Important are not the same. Click on the OK button to create the folder. Empty folders are automatically deleted by Mail. If you create a new folder and do not file a message in it, the folder is deleted when the drawer is closed.

To make this empty space available for reuse, select the drawer to be compressed and choose Compress Drawer from the main window's Maintenance menu. If multiple drawers are selected, all selected drawers will be compressed. You cannot compress an open drawer. When a drawer is compressed, the original (uncompressed) drawer is saved in a file. A message is displayed showing the name of the file. After ensuring that the compression has been successful, you should delete the uncompressed file. Ask your system manager how often to perform this task.

To move to another portion of the text, press MB1 in the slider region, drag the slider to an area representing the area of text to be displayed, and release MB1. For example, you could pick messages that were sent by a specific user on a specific day. You can then perform tasks, such as copying, moving, extracting, or reading, on this set of picked messages. The Pick dialog box allows you to specify the criteria for picking messages. Click on the fields to be used and enter the pick criteria. Text fields (the first five fields in the dialog box) search for matching text anywhere in the field and are not case sensitive. For example, entering the text John in the From: field might pick messages from Jane Johnson, John Doe, Olav Bejohnesson, and JOHN::SMITH. Click on the OK button to pick the designated messages, or the Cancel button to cancel the operation. Once a set of messages has been picked, the message index is updated to list only the picked messages. When the folder is closed, the picking criteria are lost and all messages are again available. A pick cannot be performed if a folder is open in multiple windows and contains messages to be moved or deleted. Close the folder in all additional windows to complete the move or delete operation before performing a pick.

The message is not actually deleted until the folder is closed. You can reverse the delete operation with Undo Delete on the Edit menu. You can retrieve deleted messages by opening the WASTEBASKET and moving the message to a folder. When the WASTEBASKET is emptied the messages are permanently deleted and cannot be recovered.

The default Read window is used to display messages unless you specify another window. To read an old message in another Read window, select the message and choose In New Window from the Read menu. If you have already opened multiple Read windows, you can specify the window in which to read the selected message by pulling down the main window's Read menu, displaying the In Window submenu, and choosing one of the listed Read windows. To use a different window as the default Read window, choose Make Default Window from the Read window's File menu. The [D] default symbol is displayed in the window's title bar, and it is removed from the previous default window's title bar.

The DECwindows Text Editor is the default editor used
to create messages. If multiple editors are available
on your system, you can choose a different editor to
create a message. You can change your default editor

To change editors for a specific message:
1. Choose the desired editor from the Create-Send
window's Change Editor menu.
A new window will open containing any text you may
have already entered in the message.
2. Click on the new window and enter the text of the
message, using editing commands appropriate for your
chosen editor.
3. Exit from the editor.
You cannot edit the message after exiting from the
editor. You cannot extract the message to a file,
or create a draft of the message. You can edit
the message envelope (address information) by
clicking on a field in the Create-Send window.
4. To send the message, click on the Send button in the
Create-Send window.
5. To send another message, click on the Reset button.
The DECwindows Text Editor is once again the default,
and all Create-Send options become available.

A distribution list is a file that contains a list of
users.
Distribution lists are not created within Mail. Use an
editor, such as Notepad, to create your distribution
lists.
When you create a distribution list, type one user
name per line. You can also include the names of
other distribution lists by specifying an at sign
(@) followed by the name of the distribution list.
Exclamation points (!) delimit comments; Mail will
ignore everything to the right of the exclamation

Saving a message allows you to begin writing a message
now and continue working on it later. If you are
creating a long mail message, it is advisable to save
the message occasionally.
To save a draft of a message:
1. Choose Save As... from the File menu, or click on
the Save As... button.
A dialog box is displayed, prompting you for the
name of the draft message.
2. Enter a name of 39 characters or fewer.
By default, the file type DRAFT is appended to the
file name and the file is stored in your default
directory. If you specify a different file type or
directory, Mail will not list this file when you
request a list of your draft files.
3. Click on the OK button to save the draft message.
The message can be sent or canceled after it has been
saved.
Saved draft messages are VMS files and cannot be

Choosing Use Existing File... from the File menu
allows you to send a file without using an editor.
This is useful for sending files which cannot be
edited in Mail.
To use an existing file in a message:
1. Choose Use Existing File... from the Create-Send
window's File menu.
A dialog box is displayed listing the names of
the files in your current directory.
2. Double click on the file you want to use in your
message.
A message appears in the Create-Send window
informing you of the file specification of the
file being sent.
3. Enter the appropriate information in the
envelope of the message.
4. Click on the Send button to send the message.

To include a file in a message:

To resume work on a draft message:

The file name is displayed in the file text field.
3. Click on the OK button.
The message is displayed in the Create-Send window,
where you can continue working on it.

Saving a message allows you to begin writing a message
now and continue working on it later. If you are
creating a long mail message, it is advisable to save
the message occasionally. To save a message:
1. Click on the Save As... button in a Create-Send
window.
A dialog box is displayed, prompting you for the
name of the draft message.
2. Enter a name of 39 characters or fewer.
By default, the file type DRAFT is appended to the
file name and the file is stored in your default
draft directory. If you specify a different file
type or directory, Mail will not list this file when
you request a list of your draft files.
3. Click on the OK button to save the draft message.
The message can be sent or canceled after it has been
saved.
Saved draft messages are VMS files and cannot be
deleted through Mail. You can delete draft messages
by using the Session Manager's FileView application.
