 The Create Drawer dialog box allows you to enter the
 file name and display name of the drawer to be created.

 A drawer file name is a VMS file specification and has
 the same limitations.

 A drawer display name is limited to 39 characters and
 must begin with a letter or number. It can contain
 letters, numbers, underscores, hyphens, and dollar
 signs. The prefix MAIL$ is reserved by Mail and should
 not be used as a prefix for a drawer name.

 Display names are case sensitive; IMPORTANT and
 Important are not the same. Drawer file names are not
 case sensitive.

 Click on the OK button to create the drawer, or click
 on the Cancel button if you decide not to create the
 drawer.

 The Create Folder dialog box allows you to enter the

 window in which you can create and send a message.

 The items on the Create-Send menu allow you to create
 and send messages. You can create a new message, send a
 file, send a draft file, send a reply to a message, or
 forward a message that has been sent to you.

 Choosing New Message from the Create-Send menu allows
 you to create and send a new message.

 To create a new message, point to New Message and
 release MB1. Mail opens a Create-Send window. In
 the Create-Send window you specify address information
 (who is to receive the message) and enter the text of
 the message.

 To include a file in a mail message:

 1. Choose File... from the Create-Send menu.

    Mail displays a dialog box that lists the names of
    all the files in the current directory.

 2. Double click on the name of the file you want to
    include.

    Mail opens a Create-Send window and displays the
    contents of the file.

 4. Enter the address information and edit the file if
    desired.

 5. Click on the Send button to send the file.

 Choosing File (no editor) allows you to send a
 non-text message or a file that has been formatted
 by an editor that does not exist on your system.

 When you choose File (no editor), Mail displays a
 dialog box that lists the names of all the files in
 the current directory.

 To send the file:

 1. Double click on the name of the file you want to
    include.

    Mail opens a Create-Send window.

 2. Click on a field in the envelope area of the
    Create-Send window to enter address information.

    The file name is displayed in the message area,
     but the file cannot be edited.

 3. Click on the Send button to send the message.

 Choosing Draft File... from the Create-Send menu
 allows you to continue working on a message that you
 previously saved in a file.

 To resume work on a message:

 1. Choose Draft File... from the Create-Send menu.

    A dialog box that lists the draft files in your
    default draft directory is displayed.

 2. Select the draft file to be edited or sent.

    Mail opens a Create-Send window and displays
    the contents of the file.

 3. Enter the address information and edit the file if
    desired.

 4. Click on the Send button to send the file.

 Choosing Reply from the main window's Create-Send
 menu allows you to reply to a selected message.

 To reply to a selected message:

 1. Point to the Reply menu item and display the Reply
    submenu.

 2. From the Reply sumenu, choose Create New Reply,
    Using A File..., Using A File (no editor)...,
    or Using Selected Message.

    Mail opens a Create-Send window and automatically
    enters the address information for this reply.
    Unless you chose Using a File (no editor)..., you
    can edit this information if desired.

 3. Enter the text of your reply.

 4. Click on the Send button to send the reply.

 To include the current message in a reply, choose

 based on information in the original message, and
 displays the text of the current message in the message

 Choosing Forward from the main window's Create-Send
 menu allows you to forward a selected message to
 another user.

 You must display the Forward submenu to specify if the
 message is to be sent with or without the original
 header (address information) and with or without using
 an editor.

 Mail opens a Create-Send window in which you can enter
 address information and, unless you have chosen not to
 use an editor, edit the message that you are forwarding.

 Click on the Send button to forward the message.

 The items on the Customize menu allow you to customize
 certain Mail features to suit your working environment.
 You can change your User Attributes, Send Attributes,
 Deliver Attributes, Print Attributes, and Window
 Attributes. These attributes control the way your
 messages are sent, stored, printed, and displayed.

 In addition, you can save and restore attributes you
 have changed.

 You can change such features as the personal name for
 your mail messages, a forwarding address, the name of
 the object for deleted mail, and whether you want the
 Wastebasket to be emptied upon closing a drawer.

 Customize menu displays a dialog box in which you
 specify default values for these mail features.

 Choosing Print Attributes from the main window's
 Customize menu allows you to change your default
 print settings. For example, you can change the printer
 to be used, the print format, the number of copies to
 be printed, and other settings.

 The default print settings are used when no other
 settings are specified. You can override the default
 settings when printing messages.

 Changing your print attributes affects the way
 messages are printed during the current Mail session
 only. When you exit Mail the print attributes revert
 to their original settings.

 This dialog box allows you to confirm or cancel drawer
 deletion or drawer removal.

 If you have chosen the Delete Drawer... menu item to
 display this dialog box, click on the OK button to
 delete the drawer. Click on the Cancel button to cancel
 the delete request.

 If multiple drawers are selected, you will be prompted
 to confirm or cancel each deletion separately.

 If you have chosen the Remove Drawer From Index... menu
 item to display this dialog box, click on the OK button
 to remove the drawer from your main window index. The
 drawer will not be deleted, and it can be returned to
 your main window with the Scan Mail Directory for Mail
 Drawers... or Add Drawer To Index... menu items.

 The Delete Folder dialog box allows you to confirm or
 cancel folder deletion.

 Click on the OK button to delete the folder. Click
 on the Cancel button if you decide not to delete the
 folder.

 Clicking on the Delete button deletes the selected
 messages.

 The index indicates that the message has been deleted.
 The message is not actually deleted until the folder
 is closed. Until that time you can retrieve the message
 with the Undo Move/Delete item on the Edit menu.

 Clicking on the Deliver Mail button adds new messages
 to your INBOX folder and updates the list of new
 messages.

 If you click on Deliver Mail while reading a message

 will be compressed.

 You cannot compress an open drawer.

 When a drawer is compressed, the original
 (uncompressed) drawer is saved in a file. A message is
 displayed showing the name of the file. After ensuring
 that the compression has been successful, you should
 delete the uncompressed file.

 Ask your system manager how often to perform this task.

 Clicking on the Move button allows you to move the
 selected messages to another folder.

 Mail displays a dialog box in which you enter the name
 of the drawer and folder to which the message will be
 moved. If a folder is selected in the main window, the
 names of the folder and the drawer in which it resides
 appear in their respective fields in the dialog box.

 Click on the OK button to move the message.

 The index indicates that the message has been moved.
 The message is displayed in the index in its new
 location when the current folder is closed and the
 new folder is opened.

 The message is not actually moved until the folder is
 closed. Until that time you can retrieve the message
 with the Undo Move/Delete item on the Edit menu.

 might file all messages on a related topic in one

 The INBOX is also open when you enter Mail, as
 indicated by the open folder icon in front of INBOX. If
 there are any messages in the INBOX, they are listed.
 Messages are chronologically arranged by date received.

 Messages are held in the INBOX until you move them to
 another folder.

 A scroll bar allows you to see text that cannot fit in
 one window region.

 Click on the up and down arrows at each end of the
 scroll bar to move through the text one line at a time.

 To move through larger amounts of text, use the slider
 in the center of the scroll bar. The size and location
 of the slider indicates your position in the text. A
 small slider at the top of the scroll bar indicates
 you are at the beginning of a large piece of text. A
 large slider that fills the scroll bar indicates that
 you are viewing the entire body of the text.

 To move to another portion of the text, press MB1
 in the slider region, drag the slider to an area
 representing the area of text to be displayed, and
 release MB1. For example, to move to the last portion
 of the text, drag the slider to the bottom of the
 scroll bar and release MB1.

 Mail can search the open or selected folder for
 messages that have something in common. For example,
 you could pick messages that were sent by a specific
 user on a specific day. You can then perform tasks,
 such as copying, moving, extracting, or reading, on
 this set of picked messages.

 The Pick dialog box allows you to specify the criteria
 for picking messages.

 Click on the fields to be used and enter the pick
 criteria. Text fields (the first five fields in the
 dialog box) search for matching text anywhere in the
 field and are not case sensitive. For example, entering
 the text John in the From: field might pick messages
 from Jane Johnson, John Doe, Olav Bejohnesson, and
 JOHN::SMITH.

 Click on the OK button to pick the designated messages,
 or the Cancel button to cancel the operation.

 Once a set of messages has been picked, the message
 index is updated to list only the picked messages. When
 the folder is closed, the picking criteria are lost and
 all messages are again available.

 A pick cannot be performed if a folder is open in
 multiple windows and contains messages to be moved or
 deleted. Close the folder in all additional windows to
 complete the move or delete operation before performing
 a pick.

 icons. For example, a message is identified by an icon

 contents and closed to conceal their contents. To open
 a drawer or folder, double click on the name of the
 drawer or folder. To close a drawer or folder, double
 click on the name of an open drawer or folder.

 Near the bottom of the main window is a row of push
 buttons. These buttons allow you to do the tasks you
 most commonly perform. Many of the push buttons are
 dimmed (disabled) when you first start Mail and remain
 disabled until you select a specific message.

 Push buttons duplicate pull-down menu items.

 identified by the number in their title bar, for
 example, Read 2, Read 3, and so on.

 The default Read window is used to display messages
 unless you specify another window. For example,
 clicking on the Read New Mail button or double clicking
 on a message in the main window displays the message in
 your default Read window.

 If you are using the default Read window to read a
 message in a folder other than INBOX, you can choose
 to read new mail in another Read window. Choose New
 Mail In New Window from the Read menu's In Window
 submenu to open a new Read window and display the
 first unread message in the INBOX folder.

 New mail cannot be added to the INBOX if a message in
 the INBOX is being read in a Read window other than
 the default Read window, or if you are replying to a
 message in the INBOX.

 To read an old message in another Read window, select
 the message and choose In New Window from the Read menu.

 If you have already opened multiple Read windows, you
 can specify the window in which to read the selected
 message by pulling down the main window's Read menu,
 displaying the In Window submenu, and choosing one of
 the listed Read windows.

 To use a different window as the default Read window,
 choose Make Default Window from the Read window's File
 menu. The [D] default symbol is displayed in the
 window's title bar, and it is removed from the previous
 default window's title bar.

 message can be retrieved only from its new folder.

 to create messages. If multiple editors are available
 on your system, you can choose a different editor to

 To change editors for a specific message:

    window's Change Editor menu.

    A new window will open containing any text you may
    have already entered in the message.

 2. Click on the new window and enter the text of the
    message, using editing commands appropriate for your
    chosen editor.

 3. Exit from the editor.

    You cannot edit the message after exiting from the
    editor. You cannot extract the message to a file,
    or create a draft of the message. You can edit
    the message envelope (address information) by
    clicking on a field in the Create-Send window.

 4. To send the message, click on the Send button in the
    Create-Send window.

 5. To send another message, click on the Reset button.

    The DECwindows Text Editor is once again the default,
    and all Create-Send options become available.

 To save a draft of a message:

 1. Choose Save As... from the File menu, or click on
    the Save As... button.

    A dialog box is displayed, prompting you for the
    name of the draft message.

 2. Enter a name of 39 characters or fewer.

    By default, the file type DRAFT is appended to the
    file name and the file is stored in your default
    directory. If you specify a different file type or
    directory, Mail will not list this file when you
    request a list of your draft files.

 3. Click on the OK button to save the draft message.

 The message can be sent or canceled after it has been
 saved.

 Saved draft messages are VMS files and cannot be
 deleted through Mail. You can delete draft messages
 by using the Session Manager's FileView application.

    draft directory. If you specify a different file
    type or directory, Mail will not list this file when
    you request a list of your draft files.

 3. Click on the OK button to save the draft message.

 The message can be sent or canceled after it has been
 saved.

 Saved draft messages are VMS files and cannot be
 deleted through Mail. You can delete draft messages
 by using the Session Manager's FileView application.

 If you are sending mail to someone on your node,
 specify only the user name. If you are sending mail
 to someone on another node, you must enter the node
 name and user name using the following format:

 NODENAME::USERNAME

 If you are using a message router, enter the address in
 the appropriate format for your router.

 You can send the same message to several users by
 separating their user names with commas. Press the
 Return key if you need more space.
