Advance
WPS Advance
Moves the cursor to the next character, if there is one, and sets the
direction of the buffer to FORWARD.
o If the cursor is bound, then from the end of a line it moves to the
start of the next line. (Setting the WPS keypad automatically sets the
cursor to bound.)
o If the cursor is free, you can move it anywhere in the buffer, whether
characters are already there or not. See help on SET CURSOR FREE.
Key: The WPS keypad defines KP0 as the Advance key.

Adv Scroll
WPS Scroll Advance
Scrolls vertically, moving forward until you halt scrolling or reach the
end of the buffer.
Steps:
1. Press the WPS Scroll Advance key (GOLD-KP0).
2. To halt scrolling, press any key. The normal function of that key
is then executed. Typically, you press the WPS Halt key (GOLD-`).
If the cursor is bound, it moves to the corresponding position on the the
line where you halt the scrolling or to the end of buffer. (Setting the
WPS keypad automatically sets the cursor to bound.) If the cursor is free,
it moves down in in the same column.

Append
EDT Append
Removes (cuts) the current select range or found range and adds it to the
end of what you previously removed or copied. You can then reinsert
(paste) all of this text elsewhere.
Steps:
1. Select or find the text you want to append.
2. Press the EDT Append key (KP9).
3. You can repeat steps 1 and 2 to append more text.
To insert what you removed or copied and what you
appended, use INSERT HERE or PASTE.
The text is appended to EVE's Insert Here buffer or to the DECwindows
clipboard, depending on your setting. The default setting is NOCLIPBOARD,
which uses the Insert Here buffer. See help on the SET CLIPBOARD command.

Backspace
EDT Backspace (Start of Line)
Moves the cursor to the start of the current or previous line.
o If the cursor is in the middle of a line or at the end of a line, it
moves to the start of that line.
o If the cursor is already at the start of a line, it moves to the start
of the previous line, if there is one.
Keys: The EDT keypad defines both CTRL/H and F12 as EDT Backspace.

Backup
WPS Backup
Moves the cursor to the previous character, if there is one, and sets the
direction of the buffer to REVERSE.
o If the cursor is bound, then from the start of a line it moves to the
end of the previous line, if there is one. (Setting the WPS keypad
automatically sets cursor to bound.)
o If the cursor is free, you can move it anywhere in the buffer, whether
characters are already there or not. See help on SET CURSOR FREE.
Key: The WPS keypad defines KP1 as the Backup key.

Back Scroll
WPS Scroll Backup

Character
EDT Character
Moves the cursor a character at a time in the current direction of the
buffer (shown in the status line).
The effect is similar to MOVE RIGHT or MOVE LEFT (right and left arrow
keys) except the cursor is bound to the flow or shape of your text.
Steps:
1. If necessary, set the direction you want to move in.
(Press KP4 for FORWARD, or KP5 for REVERSE.)
2. Press the EDT Character key (KP3).
In forward direction, the cursor moves right one character, or if there is
no next character, to the start of the next line. In reverse direction,
it moves left one character, or if there is no previous character, to the
end of the previous line. (See help on CHANGE DIRECTION.)
Chngcase
EDT Change Case (Chngcase)
Changes the case of the current character, select range, or found range.
Uppercase letters become lowercase; lowercase letters become uppercase.
Steps:
1. Optionally, select or find the text you want to change.
2. Press the EDT Chngcase key (GOLD-KP1).
o The cursor then moves to the next character or to the start of the next
line.
o If there is no select range or found range, the EDT Chngcase key
changes the case of the current character.

Continue Search Key
WPS Continue Search
Searches for another occurrence of a string already entered with FIND,
REPLACE, or WILDCARD FIND.
Steps:
1. If necessary, set the direction you want to search in.
(Press KP0 for WPS Advance or KP1 for WPS Backup.)
2. Press the WPS Continute Search key (GOLD-. on the keyboard).
o If the string is found in the opposite direction, EVE asks if you want
go there: If you want to go there, simply press RETURN; otherwise,
type No and press RETURN.
o EVE highlights the found text with the cursor at the beginning of the
string. If there is no text selected, you can perform operations on
the found range as on a select range:
Change case ..... such as CAPITALIZE WORD or the WPS Upper Case key
Edit ............ such as REMOVE, STORE TEXT, or the WPS Cut key
Reformat ........ with FILL or FILL RANGE
Substitute ...... with the WPS Replace key
OPEN SELECTED ... if you found a file name
o To cancel the highlighting, move off the found range or use RESET.

Delete Beginning Sentence
WPS Delete Beginning Sentence
Deletes text left of the cursor to the start of a sentence. The rest of
the text, if any, moves left and possibly up.
Steps:
1. Put the cursor right of the text you want to delete,
such as on the space between sentences.
2. Press the WPS Delete Beginning Sentence key (GOLD-CTRL/J or GOLD-F13).
Example:
The following shows the effects of the WPS Delete Beginning Sentence
key with different cursor positions:
There is no road to peace. Peace is the road.

(1) Between sentences, deletes the previous sentence -- in this case,
deletes "There is no road to peace."
(2) At the beginning of a sentence, deletes only that character -- in
this case, deletes the "P" in "Peace."
(3) In the middle of a sentence, deletes to the beginning of that
sentence -- in this case, deletes "Peace is."
o "Sentences" are bounded by periods, question marks, or exclamation
points. Periods in RUNOFF commands (such as .Blank) or decimal numbers
(such as 3.14) are treated as sentence boundaries.
o To reinsert what you deleted, use the RESTORE SENTENCE command.

Delete Character
EDT/WPS Delete Character
Deletes the character that the cursor is on or replaces it with a space,
depending on the mode of the buffer.
Steps:
1. Put the cursor on the character you want to delete.
2. Press the Delete Character key (EDT COMMA or WPS PF4).
o In insert mode, deletes the character; the rest of the line moves left.
In overstrike mode, replaces the character with a space; the rest of
the line does not move. (See help on the CHANGE MODE command.)
o At the end of a line -- regardless of the mode -- deletes only the
carriage return; the next line (if any) moves up. This is useful to
form paragraphs for FILL commands.
o To put back the deleted character, use the RESTORE CHARACTER command.

Delete Line
EDT Delete Line

Deletes text left of the cursor to the start of a word.

Delete Start Line
EDT/WPS Delete Start Line
Deletes text left of the cursor to the start of a line.

o The cursor moves with the text, staying on the same character as the
rest of the line (if any) moves left.

Delete Word
EDT/WPS Delete Word
Deletes text from the current character to the start of the next word.
Steps:
1. Put the cursor where you want to delete the word.
2. Press the Delete Word key (EDT MINUS or WPS PF3).

The following shows the effects of the Delete Word key with four
different cursor positions on a line:

EDT Delete EOL
Deletes text from the current character to the end of the line -- but does
NOT delete the carriage return at the end of the line. The cursor does
not move.

o At the end of a line, deletes the carriage return and the text of the
next line, if there is one. This is useful if the next line is blank,
so you form a paragraph for FILL commands.

EDT Line
Moves the cursor to the nearest start of line, depending on the current
direction of the buffer (shown in the status line).
Steps:
1. If necessary, set the direction you want to move in.
(Press KP4 for FORWARD, or KP5 for REVERSE.)
2. Press the EDT Line key (KP0).
In forward direction, the cursor moves to the start of the next line, if
there is one. In reverse direction, it moves to the start of the current
line or if already there, to the start of the previous line (if any).

EDT Replace
EDT Replace
Replaces the current select range or found range with the text you have
copied or removed.
Steps:
1. Copy or remove the text you want to use.
2. Select or find the text you want to replace.
3. Press the EDT Replace key (GOLD-KP9).
o You can repeat steps 2 and 3 to make another replacement elsewhere.
o The replacement text is inserted from the Insert Here buffer in EVE or
the DECwindows clipboard, depending on your setting. The default
setting is NOCLIPBOARD, which uses the Insert Here buffer. See help on

Halt
WPS Halt
Halts scrolling caused by another operation, such as pressing the WPS
Scroll Backup key (GOLD-KP1) or WPS Scroll Advance key (GOLD-KP0).
Steps:
1. Press the WPS Scroll Advance key or WPS Backup key to scroll
through the buffer.
2. Press the WPS Halt key (GOLD-`) to halt the scrolling.
o You can also stop the scrolling by pressing any key -- whether a typing
key or a function key. This also executes the function assigned to
that key, if any, whereas the WPS Halt key simply stops the scrolling.
o Pressing the WPS Halt key also ends ("remembers") a LEARN sequence, if
one is active. See help on REMEMBER.
Insert Date Time
WPS Insert Date/Time
Inserts the current date and time at your editing position.
Steps:
1. Put the cursor where you want to insert the date and time.
2. Press the WPS Insert Date/Time key (GOLD-\ or GOLD-|).
o The text looks like this: 31-AUG-1988 11:03:49
o The cursor moves with the text, staying on the same character. Thus,
to erase the time field, press the WPS Delete Previous Word key (CTRL/J
or F13).
o WPS Insert Date/Time does not automatically wrap. If the text is
inserted at or near the right margin, it may be partly out of view,
depending on the width of the window. Use FILL commands to reformat or
rewrap your text.
Lower Case
WPS Lower Case
Makes one or more letters lowercase and sets the direction to FORWARD.
Steps:
1. Optionally, select or find the text you want to change.
2. Press the WPS Lower Case key (GOLD-KP3).
o The cursor then moves to the next character or the start of the next line.
o If there is no select range or found range, the WPS Lower Case key
makes the current character lowercase, and you can then press one of
these WPS keys to continue making letters lowercase:
Line ........... KP2 or GOLD-KP2 Sentence ... KP7 or GOLD-KP7
Word ........... KP4 or GOLD-KP4 Page ....... PF2

Next Screen
EDT Next Screen
Scrolls vertically to show the next section of text -- roughly 75% of the
window size.
o If the cursor is free, it moves down in the same column, regardless of
the shape of your text.
o If the cursor is bound, it moves down to the corresponding position in
the lines below, following the shape of your text.
o If you are at the bottom of the buffer, the cursor does not move.
Key: The EDT keypad defines Next Screen (E6) as the EDT Next Screen key.

Open Line
EDT Open Line
Breaks the line at your current position. Any text to the right of the
cursor is pushed down, starting a new line. The cursor does NOT move.
This is useful to create room for adding text in the middle of a line or
paragraph, or to add blank lines to make paragraphs for FILL commands.
Steps:
1. Put the cursor where you want to break the line.
2. Press the EDT Open Line key (GOLD-KP0).
The effect is similar to pressing RETURN except the cursor does not move.
Any existing text to the right and below the cursor is pushed down,
starting a new line at the current left margin.
Page Marker
WPS Page Marker
Inserts a page marker or "soft" page break at the start of a line by
itself.
Steps:
1. Put the cursor where you want to insert the page break.
2. Press the WPS Page Marker key (GOLD-P).
A soft page break is a form feed followed by the null character, appearing
as a small FF and a small NL. Soft page breaks are erased or relocated by
PAGINATE commands (WPS GOLD-PF2). By contrast, a "hard" page break is a
form feed only (small FF), typically done with the INSERT PAGE BREAK
command (CTRL/L or WPS GOLD-N).

Paragraph
WPS Paragraph
Moves the cursor to the start of the next or previous paragraph, depending
on the current direction of the buffer (shown in the status line).
Steps:
1. If necessary, set the direction you want to move in.
(Press KP0 for WPS Advance or KP1 for WPS Backup.)
2. Press the WPS Paragraph key (KP5).
o In forward direction (advance), the cursor moves to the start of the
next paragraph, if there is one. In reverse direction (backup), it
moves to the start of the previous paragraph, if there is one.
o In EVE, "paragraphs" are bounded by any of the following:
Blank lines Top or bottom of the buffer
Page breaks RUNOFF commands (such as .Blank)
o If there are no blank lines or other paragraph boundaries in the
current direction, the cursor moves to the top or bottom of the buffer.
Previous Screen
EDT Previous Screen
Scrolls vertically to show the previous section of text -- roughly 75% of
the window size.
o If the cursor is free, it moves up in the same column, regardless of
the shape of your text.
o If the cursor is bound, it moves up to the corresponding position in
the lines above, following the shape of your text.
o If you are at the top of the buffer, the cursor does not move.
Key: The EDT keypad defines Prev Screen (E5) as the EDT Prev Screen key.

Repeat
EDT/WPS Repeat Key
Repeats the next command or keystroke as often as you specify, without
your having to retype it.
Steps:
1. Press GOLD and type a number from 1 to 32767.
2. Type a command or press a key that you want repeated --
for example, a typing key, such as the dash or hyphen,
or a function key, such as the EDT Delete Line key.
o If you mistakenly press GOLD and a number, use RESET to cancel the
operation (press GOLD-SELECT or with EDT or WPS, press GOLD-PERIOD).
o You cannot use GOLD-number combinations to repeat the WPS Paste key,
because GOLD-1 through GOLD-9 specify WPS alternate paste buffers.
Instead use the REPEAT command.
Ruler
WPS Ruler
Displays a ruler showing the current margins, tab stops, and paragraph
indent, and wrap point. You can then change these settings by moving the
cursor inside the ruler and pressing the following keys:

!@#$%^&*() Saves settings in ruler number 0--9. For example,
type ! for ruler 1, @ for ruler 2, and so on.
HELP Displays help on RULER KEYS.
RETURN or Exits from the ruler and resumes editing.
GOLD-RETURN
Key: The WPS keypad defines GOLD-R as the Ruler key.

Search Right Angle
WPS Search Right Angle (<>)
Searches for the next or previous right angle bracket (>) in the buffer.
Steps:
1. If necessary, set the direction you want to search in.
(Press KP0 for WPS Advance or KP1 for WPS Backup.)
2. Press the WPS Search Right Angle key (the ENTER key).
o If a right angle bracket is found, the cursor moves to the
immediately following character.
o If an angle bracket is found in the opposite direction, EVE
asks if you want go there (same as with the FIND command).
o If there is NO right angle bracket in the buffer, the cursor
does not move.
Sect
EDT Sect (Next/Prev Section)
Scrolls vertically to show the next or previous section of text -- roughly
75% of the window size.
Steps:
1. If necessary, set the direction you want to move in.
(Press KP4 for FORWARD, or KP5 for REVERSE.)
2. Press the EDT Sect key (KP8).
o In forward direction, the scrolling is towards the bottom of the
buffer. In reverse direction, the scrolling is towards the top.
o If the cursor is free, it stays in the same column. If the cursor is
bound, it follows the shape of your text. See help on the SET CURSOR
BOUND and SET CURSOR FREE commands.

Sentence

Specins
EDT Specins
Enters a character or control code from the DEC Multinational Character
Set by using the ASCII decimal value for the character.
Steps:
1. Press GOLD and type the decimal value for the character, such
as 27 for the escape character or 181 for the micro symbol (ยต).
The number appears in reverse video on the command line.
2. Press the EDT Specins key (GOLD-KP3).
o The EDT Specins key enters the character according to the current mode
of the buffer as shown in the status line. In insert mode, the
character you specify is inserted at the current position. In
overstrike mode, it replaces the current character.
o Some control codes appear as a backwards question mark.
o Alternatively, you can enter multinational characters with the Compose
Character key. To enter control codes, such as escape, use the QUOTE
command (or press CTRL/V).

Subs
EDT Subs
Substitutes the text you have previously removed or stored for the current
select range or found range.
Steps:
1. Copy or remove the text you want to use.
2. Select or find the text you want to replace.
3. Press the EDT Subs key (GOLD-ENTER).
EVE replaces the select range or found range with the text you copied or
removed, and then searches for the next occurrence of the string you
selected or found. If it is found again, you can do the following:
o Press the EDT Subs key again to make another substitution.
o Press the FIND key twice or press the EDT Fndnxt key (PF3)
to skip this occurrence and find the next one.
o Use RESET to cancel the search.
The replacement text is inserted from the Insert Here buffer in EVE or the
DECwindows clipboard, depending on your setting. The default setting is
NOCLIPBOARD, which uses the Insert Here buffer. See help on the SET
CLIPBOARD command.

Swap
WPS Swap
Swaps (transposes) the character that the cursor is on and the character
immediately following it.
This is useful for correcting spelling errors. For example, if you
mistakenly typed "teh" instead of "the," do the following steps:
1. Put the cursor on the letter "e."
2. Press the WPS Swap key (GOLD-ENTER).
This swaps or transposes the letters "e" and "h": the result is "the,"
with the cursor on the "e."
If you are on the last character of a line, that character is moved to the
start of the next line. If you are at the end of a line (carriage
return), nothing is swapped.
Tab Position
WPS Tab Position
Moves the cursor to the next or previous tab character, depending on the
current direction (shown in the status line).
Steps:
1. If necessary, set the direction you want to move in.
(Press KP0 for WPS Advance or KP1 for WPS Backup.)
2. Press the WPS Tab Position key (KP8).
o In forward direction, the cursor moves to the next tab character.
In reverse direction, it moves to the previous tab character.
o If there is no tab character in the current direction, the cursor moves
to the nearest start of line.
o To find out the tab stops of the current buffer, use the SHOW command
or press the WPS Ruler key (GOLD-R).

Upper Case
WPS Upper Case
Makes one or more letters uppercase and sets the direction to FORWARD.
Steps:
1. Optionally, select or find the text you want to change.
2. Press the WPS Upper Case key (KP3).
o The cursor then moves to the next character or the start of the next line.
o If there is no select range or found range, the WPS Upper Case key
makes the current character uppercase, and you can then press one of
these WPS keys to continue making letters uppercase:
Line ........... KP2 or GOLD-KP2 Sentence ... KP7 or GOLD-KP7
Word ........... KP4 or GOLD-KP4 Page ....... PF2
Tab Position ... KP8 Bottom ..... GOLD-B
Paragraph ...... KP5 Top ........ GOLD-T

to specify an alternate paste buffer. Otherwise, EVE uses the
Insert Here buffer.
3. Press the WPS Copy key (GOLD-MINUS on the keypad).
4. To paste text, specify the alternate paste buffer if you used one, and
then press the WPS Paste key (COMMA, GOLD-COMMA, or INSERT HERE).
Note: WPS keypad functions do NOT use the DECwindows clipboard. For
information on copying and pasting with the clipboard, see help on
the STORE TEXT and INSERT HERE commands.

WPS Cut
WPS Cut
Cuts the currently selected or found text, which you can paste elsewhere
-- optionally using an alternate paste buffer. In a buffer list, deletes
the buffer whose name the cursor is on (similar to DELETE BUFFER).
Steps:
1. Select or find the text you want to cut.
2. Optionally, press the GOLD key and type a number from 1 through 9
to specify an alternate paste buffer. Otherwise, EVE uses the
Insert Here buffer.
3. Press the WPS Cut key (MINUS on the keypad or the REMOVE key).
4. To paste text, specify the alternate paste buffer if you used one, and
then press the WPS Paste key (COMMA, GOLD-COMMA, or INSERT HERE).
Note: WPS keypad functions do NOT use the DECwindows clipboard. For
information on cutting and pasting with the clipboard, see help on
the REMOVE and INSERT HERE commands.
When you are in the Buffer List buffer, the WPS Cut key deletes a buffer
without your having to type the buffer name, as follows:
1. Use SHOW BUFFERS to list the buffers you have created.
2. Put the cursor on the name of the buffer you want to delete.
3. Press the WPS Cut key.

WPS Line
WPS Line
Moves the cursor to the nearest start of line, depending on the current
direction of the buffer (shown in the status line).
Steps:
1. If necessary, set the direction you want to move in.
(Press KP0 for WPS Advance, or KP1 for WPS Backup.)
2. Press the WPS Line key (KP2 or GOLD-KP2).
In forward direction (advance), the cursor moves to the start of the next
line, if there is one. In reverse direction (backup), it moves to the
start of the current line or if already there, to the start of the

WPS Paste
Pastes the text you have previously cut or copied -- optionally using an
alternate paste buffer.
Steps:
1. Optionally, press the GOLD key and type a number from 1 through 9
to specify the alternate paste buffer used when you cut or copied
the text. Otherwise, EVE uses the Insert Here buffer.
2. Put the cursor where you want to paste the text, and press the WPS
Paste key (COMMA or GOLD-COMMA on the keypad, or the INSERT HERE
key).
o The text is reinserted whether the mode of the current buffer is insert
or overstrike, but does not automatically rewrap. Use FILL to reformat
your text.
o You cannot use GOLD-number combinations to repeat the WPS Paste key,
because GOLD-1 through GOLD-9 specify WPS alternate paste buffers.
Instead use the REPEAT command.
Note: WPS keypad functions do NOT use the DECwindows clipboard. For
information on pasting from the clipboard, see help on the INSERT
HERE command.
