EVE FIND — VMS 5.1-B

 FIND

Searches for a string of text you specify and highlights the found text.

 Steps:

    1. Use the FIND command. (See key list below.)

    2. Type the text you want to find. Use all lowercase to find any
occurrence of the string. Use mixed case or uppercase to find an
        exact match. (See table below.)

o If the string is found in the opposite direction, EVE asks if you want
go there: If you want to go there, simply press RETURN; otherwise,
    type No and press RETURN.

o EVE highlights the found text with the cursor at the beginning of the
string. If there is no text selected, you can perform operations on
the found range as on a select range:

Change case ..... such as LOWERCASE WORD or the EDT Chngcase key
Edit ............ such as COPY, REMOVE, or the EDT Append key
Reformat ........ with FILL or FILL RANGE
Substitute ...... such as the EDT Subs key or WPS Replace key
OPEN SELECTED ... if you found a file name

o To cancel the highlighting, move off the found range or use RESET.

o To find another occurrence of the same string, use the FIND NEXT
command or press the FIND key twice.

o By default, if you type the search string in all lowercase, EVE
searches for any occurrence. If you type the string in uppercase or
mixed case, EVE searches for an exact match:

Search string EVE finds and highlights
       ------------- ----------------------------
       digital digital, Digital, or DIGITAL
       Digital Digital
       DIGITAL DIGITAL

o On DECwindows, you can toggle case-sensitivity for searches --
particularly useful to find only lowercase strings:

       1. Choose Global Preferences in the Customize menu.
       2. Click MB1 on the Set Find Case Exact toggle button.

o If you press a key defined as FIND or type the command and let EVE
prompt you for the search string, you can terminate the command by
pressing a direction-setting key to begin searching in that direction.
For example, with the EDT keypad, you can press FORWARD (KP4) or
REVERSE (KP5). If you terminate the command by pressing RETURN, the
search starts in the current direction of the buffer.

o In typing the FIND command, if you want to search for the word "next"
or "selected," put it in quotes or let EVE prompt you for the string.

Keys: The following keys are each defined as FIND:
