Name

xset − set parameters for the X Window System server

Syntax

xset [ options ]

Description

The xset command customizes the characteristics of the display.

Options

The xset command has the following options:

−b numSpecifies the bell volume (between 0 and 7), pitch, and duration.  To disable the bell, precede this option by a minus sign (−).  If no parameters are given, the system defaults will be used.  If one numerical parameter is given, the bell volume will be set.  The second numerical parameter specifies the bell pitch in Hertz, and the third specifies the duration in milliseconds.  The Xserver sets the characteristics of the bell as closely as it can to your specifications.

−c numSpecifies the keyclick volume (between 1 and 100).  To disable the keyclick, precede this option with a minus sign (−).  The default is 6.

−d dispnameSpecifies the display screen that xset customizes.  If the display option is not specified, xset uses the display screen specified by your DISPLAY environment variable.  The display option has the format hostname:number.  Using two colons (::) instead of one (:) indicates that DECnet is to be used for transport.  The default is :0.  For more information, see X(.).

−display dispnameThis option is the same as the −d option.

−fp pathSpecifies the font path.  To restore the default font path, specify default.

−led nSpecifies that the keyboard light-emitting diodes (LEDs) should be turned on or off.  For example, xset led 3 would turn LED 3 on and xset −led 3 would turn it off.  The LED values refer to different LEDs on different hardware.  Omitting the LED number in these commands would turn all of the LEDs on or off, respectively.  LED values are between 1 and 32.

−m accel thrSpecifies the mouse parameters (acceleration and threshold) in pixels.  The acceleration of the mouse takes effect only if the threshold is exceeded.  This way, you can use the mouse for precise alignment when you move it slowly, yet can use it to travel across the screen when desired.  If you supply only one parameter, it is interpreted as acceleration.

−pSpecifies pixel color values (color map entry number in decimal and a color specification).  You can change the root window colors by altering entries 0 and 1.  If the map entry is a read-only color, an error results.  If the server allocates these privately, an error results.

−qSpecifies that xset display information about the current settings.

−rSpecifies that autorepeat be turned on.  To disable autorepeat, precede this option with a minus sign (−).  The default is on.

−s
Specifies whether xset should display a blank screen (blank) or a pattern (noblank).  The expose flag allows the server to freely discard window contents (allow window exposures).  If the server can regenerate the screens without causing exposure events, then noexpose disables the screen saver.  The length parameter determines how long the server must be inactive for screen saving to activate.  The period parameter determines the period to change the background pattern to avoid burn-in.

You can turn the −b, −c, −led, −r and −s options on or off by following them with on or off, respectively.  When you log out, xset resets all specifications to their default values.
