Name

xwininfo − X Window System window information summarizer

Syntax

xwininfo [ options ]

Description

The xwininfo command displays an X window information summary on the selected window.  To select a window, place the mouse pointer in the appropriate window and click any mouse button.

Options

−bits Specifies that various attributes of the selected window be displayed.  Information displayed includes the window’s window and bit gravities, the window’s backing store hint and backing_planes value, its backing pixel, and whether or not the window has a save-under set.

−d dispname Specifies the display screen on which xwininfo displays its window.  If the display option is not specified, xwininfo uses the display screen specified by your DISPLAY environment variable.  The display option has the format hostname:number.  Using two colons (::) instead of one (:) indicates that DECnet is to be used for transport.  The default is :0.  For more information, see X(.).

−display dispname This option is the same as the −d option.

−events Specifies that the selected window’s event masks be displayed.  Both the event mask of events wanted by some client and the event mask of events not to prograte are displayed.

−help Specifies that the xwininfo command syntax summary be displayed.

−id id Specifies the identification number (ID) of the window to be used as the selected window.  This option is useful in debugging X applications where the selected window is not mapped to the screen or where the use of the mouse might either be impossible or interfere with the application.  By default, xwininfo uses the window selected with the mouse.

−int Specifies that all X window IDs should be displayed as integer values.  The default is hexadecimal.

−name window Specifies the selected window without using the mouse.

−root Specifies that the root window is the selected window.  This option is useful when the root window is completely obscured.

−size Specifies that the selected window’s sizing hints be displayed.  Information displayed includes the following for both the normal size hints and the zoom size hints: the user supplied location (if any), the program supplied location (if any), the user supplied size (if any), the program supplied size (if any), the minimum size (if any), the maximum size (if any), the resize increments (if any), and the minimum and maximum aspect ratios (if any).

−stats Specifies that various attributes of the selected window be displayed.  Information displayed includes the location of the window, its width and height, its depth, border width, class, and map state.

−tree Specifies that the IDs and names of the root, parent, and children windows of the selected window be displayed.

−wm Specifies that the selected window’s window manager hints be displayed.  Information displayed includes whether or not the application accepts input, what the window’s icon window number and name are, where the window’s icon should be placed, and what the window’s initial state should be.
