NAME

softclockd − softclock interrupt daemon

SYNOPSIS

/usr/etc/softclockd

DESCRIPTION

softclockd starts a daemon process to execute callout queue entries.  By default, execution of callout queue entries is done in the context of a low-priority software interrupt.

softclockd may be started at boot time by uncommenting the appropriate line in /etc/rc.  Note that once softclockd is initiated, it cannot be killed.  System administrators may wish to review the run options specified in /etc/rc and change them as needed.  The run-time attributes of softclockd can be adjusted according to system requirements.  You can assign softclockd a priority that is less favorable than real-time processes that require a high degree of responsiveness.  You must use caution in assigning more favorable priorities to such processes, however, because the tasks that softclockd performs can be held out—for example, data from devices with major- or minor-protected device drivers that queue calls to driver interrupt routines may be lost if softclockd is prevented from running for long periods of time.

softclockd will fail if it is not started by the superuser or if an instantiation of softclockd exists.
