uname(1) (Essential Utilities) uname(1)
NAME
uname - print name of current UNIX system
SYNOPSIS
uname [ -amnprsv ]
uname [ -S node_name ]
DESCRIPTION
uname prints the current system name of the UNIX system to standard
output. It is mainly useful to determine which system one is using.
The options cause selected information returned by uname(2) and/or
sysinfo(2) to be printed:
-a Print all information.
-m Print the machine hardware name.
-n Print the nodename (the nodename is the name by which the
system is known to a communications network).
-p Print the current host's processor type.
-r Print the operating system release.
-s Print the name of the operating system (e.g. UNIX System V).
This is the default.
-v Print the operating system version.
On the computer, the nodename may be changed by specifying a nodename
argument to the -S option. The nodename argument is restricted to
SYS_NMLN characters. SYS_NMLN is an implementation specific value
defined in <sys/utsname.h>. Only the super-user is allowed this
capability.
