xkill(1X) xkill(1X)
NAME xkill - terminates a client application SYNOPSIS xkill [-display display] [-id resource] [-button number] [-frame] [-all] DESCRIPTION xkill forces the X server to close connections to client ap- plications. This command is very dangerous, but is useful for terminating applicatons that have displayed undesired windows on the screen. If you do not specify an identifier as an argument to -id, xkill displays a special pointer as a prompt for you to select a window of the application you want to terminate. When you press the mouse button (or LEFT or RIGHT ARROW key) while the pointer is over a nonroot win- dow, the server closes its connection to the client appli- caiton that created the window. Options The xkill command accepts these options: -all Indicates that all clients with top-level windows on the screen should be terminated. The xkill command asks you to select the root window with each of the currently defined buttons to give you several chances to terminate. Use of this option is highly discouraged. -button number Specifies the mouse button number (for a three- button mouse) to be used to select a window of the application you want to terminate. If you specify any, you can use any mouse button. By default, the first button in the pointer map, which is usually
r
the left-most button, is used. On a Macintosh com-
puter, 1 is the mouse button, 2 is the LEFT ARROW key, and 3 is the RIGHT ARROW key. -display display Specifies the name of the X server to contact. -id resource Specifies the X identifier for the resource whose creator is to be terminated. If no resource is specified, xkill displays a special pointer with which you select the window of the application to terminate. -frame Causes xkill to ignore the standard conventions for finding top-level client windows, which are typical- ly nested inside a window manager window, and to November, 1990 1
