xclock(1X) xclock(1X)
NAME xclock - displays an analog or digital clock SYNOPSIS xclock [toolkit-option]... [-help] [-analog] [-digital] [- chime] [-hd color] [-hl color] [-update frequency] [-padding pixels] DESCRIPTION xclock displays the time in analog or digital form. The time is continuously updated at a user-specified frequency. This client is a wrapper around the Athena Clock widget. Options The xclock client application accepts all standard X Toolkit command-line options, as described in X(1X), as well as these options: -analog Indicates that a conventional 12-hour clock face with tick marks and hands should be used. This is the default. -chime Indicates that the clock should chime once on the half hour and twice on the hour. -digital Indicates that a 24-hour digital clock should be used. -hd color Specifies the color of the hands on an analog clock. The default is black. -help Displays a summary of the command syntax. -hl color Specifies the color of the edges of the hands on an analog clock and is useful only on color screens. The default is black. -padding pixels Specifies the width in pixels of the padding between the window border and clock digits or picture. The default is 8 on an analog clock and 10 on a digital clock. -update frequency Specifies the frequency in seconds at which xclock should update its display. If the clock is obscured and then exposed, it is immediately updated. A value of less than 30 enables a second hand on an analog clock. The default is 60. November, 1990 1

X defaults This client uses the Athena Clock widget in the X Toolkit. It understands all the core resource names and classes, as well as the following: analog (class Boolean) Specifies whether an analog clock should be used in- stead of a digital one. The default is TRUE. chime (class Boolean) Specifies whether a bell should be rung on the hour and half hour. font (class Font) Specifies the font to be used for the digital clock. Note that variable-width fonts do not always display correctly. foreground (class Foreground) Specifies the color of the tick marks. The default depends on whether reverseVideo is specified. If re- verseVideo is specified, the default is white; oth- erwise the default is black. hands (class Foreground) Specifies the color of the inside of the clock's hands. The default depends on whether reverseVideo is specified. If reverseVideo is specified, the de- fault is white; otherwise the default is black. height (class Height) Specifies the height of the clock. The default for analog clocks is 164 pixels; the default for digital clocks is whatever is needed to display the digits in the chosen font. highlight (class Foreground) Specifies the color used to highlight the clock's hands. The default depends on whether reverseVideo is specified. If reverseVideo is specified, the de- fault is white; otherwise the default is black. padding (class Margin) Specifies in pixels the amount of internal padding to be used. The default is 8. update (class Interval) Specifies the frequency in seconds at which the time should be redisplayed. width (class Width) Specifies the width of the clock. The default for 2 November, 1990

analog clocks is 164 pixels; the default for digital clocks is whatever is needed to display the digits in the chosen font. Widget hierarchy To specify resources, you should know the hierarchy of the widgets that compose xclock. In the following notation, in- dentation indicates hierarchical structure. The widget class name is given first, followed by the widget instance name. XClock xclock Clock clock Environment variables The xclock command uses these environment variables: DISPLAY Specifies the default host, display number, and screen. XENVIRONMENT Specifies the name of a resource file that overrides the global resources stored in the RESOURCE_MANAGER property. LIMITATIONS xclock believes the system clock. When in digital mode, the string should be centered automat- ically. NOTES Copyright 1988, Massachusetts Institute of Technology. See X(1X) for a full statement of rights and permissions.
