lpc(1M) lpc(1M)
NAME lpc - controls the operation of the line printer SYNOPSIS lpc [command [argument]...] ARGUMENTS command [argument] Specifies a command and its arguments to be passed to the line printer. This option can be one of the following: ? [command]... help [command]... Prints a short description of each command specified in the argument list. If there are no arguments, this command prints a list of the recognized commands. abort all abort printer... Terminates an active spooling daemon on the local host immediately; then disables printing for the specified printers. This command prevents lpr from starting new daemons. clean all clean printer... Removes any temporary files, data files, and control files that cannot be printed from the specified printer queue(s) on the local machine. For example, this command is useful for prevention of forming a complete printer job. disable all disable printer... Turns off the spooling queues for the specified printers. This command prevents lpr from entering new printer jobs in the queue. down all message down printer message Turns off the spooling queue for the specified printers, disables printing, and puts the message entered (in place of message) in the printer status file. You need not enclose the message in quotation marks. The remaining arguments are treated like echo(1). Use this command to disable a printer and to let others know why you have done so. The lpq command indicates that the printer is down and prints the status message. January 1992 1

enable all enable printer... Enables spooling on the local queue for the listed printers. This command allows lpr to put new jobs in the spool queue. exit quit Exits from lpc. restart all restart printer... Attempts to start a new printer daemon. This command is useful when some abnormal condition terminates the daemon unexpectedly and leaves jobs in the queue. The lpq command reports that no daemon is present when this condition occurs. If you are logged in as root, try to abort the current daemon first; that is, kill and restart a stuck daemon. start all start printer... Enables printing and starts a spooling daemon for the listed printers. status all status printer... Displays the status of daemons and queues on the local machine. stop all stop printer... Stops a spooling daemon after the current job is complete, and disables printing. topq printer [jobnum]... topq printer [user]... Places the jobs (identified by the job number or by the owner of the job) in the order listed at the top of the printer queue. up all up printer... Enables everything and starts a new printer daemon. This command undoes the effects of down (described earlier in the ``Arguments'' section). DESCRIPTION lpc allows the system administrator to control the operation of the line-printer system. For each line printer configured in /etc/printcap, lpc can do the following tasks: 2 January 1992

lpc(1M) lpc(1M)
⊕ disable or enable a printer ⊕ disable or enable a printer's spooling queue ⊕ rearrange the order of jobs in a spooling queue ⊕ find the status of printers, and their associated spooling queues and printer daemons Without any arguments, lpc prompts for commands from the standard input. If you supply arguments, lpc interprets the first argument as a command and each remaining argument as a parameter to command. You can redirect the standard input so that lpc reads commands from a file. You can abbreviate the commands. STATUS MESSAGES AND VALUES Here are some of the common error messages with a brief explanation: ?Ambiguous command The abbreviation matches more than one command. ?Invalid command No match was found. ?Privileged command Only the user logged in as root can run the command. FILES /etc/lpc Executable file /etc/printcap Printer description file /usr/spool/* Spool directories /usr/spool/*/lock Lock file for queue control SEE ALSO lpd(1M) lpq(1), lpr(1), lprm(1) in A/UX Command Reference printcap(4) in A/UX Programmer's Reference January 1992 3
