volcopy(1M) volcopy(1M)
NAME volcopy, labelit - copy file systems with label checking SYNOPSIS volcopy [-a] [-bpidensity] [-buf] [-feetsize] [-reelnum] [-s] fsname special1 volname1 special2 volname2 labelit special [fsname volume [-n]] ARGUMENTS -a Invokes a verification sequence requiring a positive operator response instead of the standard 10-second delay before the copy is made. -bpidensity Specifies bits-per-inch (that is, 800/1600/6250). -buf Uses double buffered I/O. -feetsize Specifies the size of reel in feet (that is, 1200/2400). fsname Specifies the mounted name of the file system, such as root , or u1, of the file system to be copied. -n Provides for initial labeling of new tapes only (this destroys previous contents). -reelnum Specifies the beginning reel number for a restarted copy. -s Invokes the DEL if wrong verification sequence (default). special Specifies the physical disk section or tape, such as /dev/rdsk/c0d0s0, and /dev/rmt/0m. special1 Specifies the physical disk section or tape of the file system being extracted that is associated with volname1. special2 Specifies the physical disk section or tape of the file system being extracted that is associated with volname2. volname1 January 1992 1

Specifies the physical volume name of the file system being extracted that is associated with special1. volname2 Specifies the physical volume name of the file system being extracted that is associated with special2. volume Specifies the physical volume name, such as pk3 and t0122. The volume name should match the external label sticker. Such label names are limited to six or fewer characters. This argument may be replaced with a - to use the existing volume name. DESCRIPTION volcopy makes a literal copy of the file system using a block size matched to the device. The program requests length and density information if it is not given on the command line or is not recorded on an input tape label. If the file system is too large to fit on one reel, volcopy will prompt for additional reels. Labels of all reels are checked. Tapes may be mounted alternately on two or more drives. If volcopy is interrupted, it will ask if the user wants to quit or wants a shell. In the latter case, the user can perform other operations (for example, labelit) and return to volcopy by exiting the new shell. The arguments fsname and volname are recorded in the last 12 characters of the superblock (char fsname[6], volname[6];). labelit can be used to provide initial labels for unmounted disk or tape file systems. With the optional arguments omitted, labelit prints current label values. EXAMPLES The command: volcopy newsys /dev/rdsk/c0d0s0 1 /dev/rdsk/c1d0s0 1 copies volume 1 of the file system labeled newsys which is mounted on /dev/rdsk/c0d0s0 onto volume 1 of /dev/rdsk/c1d0s0. labelit /dev/rdsk/c1d0s0 oldsys save relabels the file system mounted on /dev/rdsk/c1d0s0 with a new fsname of oldsys and a new volname of save. LIMITATIONS Only device names beginning with /dev/rmt are treated as tapes. 2 January 1992

labelit will not work on a cartridge tape system, since such a tape cannot be used as a file system. As a result, volcopy cannot be used with cartridge tapes, since it requires the tape to be labeled by labelit.
