atnvereg(1M) atnvereg(1M)
NAME
at_nvereg - register an NVE on an AppleTalk network
SYNOPSIS
atnvereg [-d] [-f network] object -ttype
DESCRIPTION
atnvereg asks the Name Binding Protocol module to register
the Network Visible Entry (NVE) with the given object and
type name on a DDP socket. The daemon will broadcast a
lookup request over the AppleTalk network to make sure the
NVE is not registered yet. If a NVE is found with the same
name, the following message is displayed to indicate that
the registration cannot be completed:
at_nvereg: name already in use, registration not
completed.
If -d is used as an argument, the specified local NVE will
be deregistered.
Since it is possible to have multiple AppleTalk networks
attached to a system, this utility needs to know the path in
the file system to the desired network. Using
-f network
(which is required, not optional) will select the network
network. For example:
-f /dev/appletalk2
will choose the second AppleTalk network that is attached to
the system. If -f - is used, then standard input will be
used.
It is important to note that the path to the network must be
further specifed with the socket number on which the NVE is
to be registered. For example:
at_nvereg -f /dev/appletalk/socket128 -t LaserWriter
Writer2
The program that is going to provide the service that is
being registered must have the socket open prior to the
invocation of atnvereg. This is because the registration
will be removed when the service associated with a socket is
not opened by anyone.
EXAMPLE
(see the example above)
The example above will register the NVE with object name
Writer2 and type name LaserWriter on socket 128.
